That Gratuitous Shirtless Beckham Picture (Which You Knew I Would Post Eventually)

By: Laurie | August 10th, 2007

beckham-shirtless.jpgQuestion: How many times do we see MLS players strip down to shorts before donning their jerseys to take the field? I can’t remember any others, but maybe I just wasn’t paying attention.

I myself think it sets a nice precedent. I could fully support a rule requiring all MLS players to go half-naked before entering the field. Strictly for the sake of the players’ comfort, of course. Donning fresh togs before taking the pitch is so much more pleasant for all concerned.

(P.S. Do you think he waxes his chest hair?)

CORRECTION: After looking more closely, I’m thinking this is the AFTER-the-game gratuitous shirtless pic. I’m good with this and think that players who go shirtless twice in one game create a positive standard which MLS players everywhere should endeavor to live up to.

Laurie!!! You're a fan of football in Europe--where they never don their jerseys until just before coming on...think of all the times someone three deep on the bench gets called unexpectedly and is still pulling the thing over their head while they run out. Good times...
And yes, that photo was post shirt swap with I can't remember whom from DC. I was thoroughly amused by seeing a player being handed a clean shirt--or even a towel--after giving theirs away, something I'd never witnessed before, AND a terrible precedent if you ask me! Forget the deadly turf issue, there are some match day traditions that just shouldn't be tampered with on this side of the pond!
Have to go do some yoga breathing before the LFPC match...
