The New Becks-Tat: Life, Long Life, Wealth? Values We Can All Agree On.

By: Laurie | March 17th, 2008

becks-tat2.jpgGot this link from a new yet loyal reader who wishes to remain anonymous. (You know who you are.) It comes to us via TMZ and is a photo of one of the few previously un-inked spots on Beckham’s body — his side. (To which I say: Ouch.)

TMZ says:

UPDATE: TMZ’s resident Asian orthography expert reveals that the ink is comprised of cursive Chinese characters, the first of which means “life,” and another of which means long life. There are several characters meaning “wealth.” All in all, something along the lines of Becks being rich for a real long time. Yeah, that seems about right.

If it were me, I probably would have learned my lesson about foreign-language tattoos at about the time they misspelled my wife’s name in Hindi. Which was…oh…I dunno, several years ago?

But…no. Here we go again. But this time around he probably has the money for language consultants do be sure the job is done right.

Me personally, though? Even if I were as into conspicuous consumption as the Beckhams, I don’t know that I’d want “wealth” permanently inked on my body. For some reason I’m getting visions of King Midas. And we all know how that ended up.

UPDATE: Okay, this is what I get for relying on TMZ for linguistic analysis. (As opposed to just for photos, where they’re the snarky, catty kings.) What this apparently says is: ‘Death and life have determined appointments, Riches and honors depend upon heaven.’ Which makes a bit more sense, but is still a rather bizarre thing to permanently ink on one’s body. Shall we analyze this?
