The Official Beckham Injury Update
By: Laurie | March 7th, 2007It’s official and from MLSnet.com. (Because they’re probably trying desperately to calm panicky season ticket holders.) The Beckham injury is “not as serious as was first thought and he will be sidelined for only around four weeks.” Which sounds a teensy bit optimistic for a thirty-one-year-old player. But I’m not a doctor. So we can hope.
So. About that injury. How did it happen again?
“The injury occurred…when he crashed into the advertising boards behind the goal, his momentum carrying him off the field as he attempted to make a cross.”
Yeah, I’ve heard those advertising boards can be vicious. Although I noticed this same kind of thing when he was here in Seattle last summer playing with Real Madrid. When he’s playing, nothing gets him unfocused. And that’s a good thing. Right?
So the good news for the Galaxy is that it shouldn’t affect his arrival or ability to play here at all. But the bad news for David is that he’ll miss Real Madrid’s Champion’s League game today against Bayern Munich after he played such an integral role in their victory in the last one. He’ll also miss the opportunity for a triumphant return to Manchester this month as one of the “Europe XI” facing Manchester United in a charity match.
And most disappointing of all, there had been rumblings that, based on David’s recent play, England boss Steve McClaren had been considering eating crow and recalling David to the England squad. They apparently had issues when both were at Manchester United, and dumping David was one of McClaren’s first housekeeping acts when he took over the National Team after World Cup. Only problem is, England has been kind of sucking ever since. So wouldn’t that have been a feather in our David’s cap?
The good news is, there are more England games to come. All David needs to do is come back from this injury, rehabilitate fast and return to previous form.
Easy, right?
(But there is a silver lining for me in this injury. I can now root whole-heartedly for Bayern Munich and my favorite French right-back, Willy Sagnol, in today’s Champions League game. So thanks, David, for making my life easier.)
