This Was Too Good Not To Post

By: jen | July 23rd, 2009

It has taken me a bit to catch up on my RSS feeds lately, so when I checked through them today I found this gem from Paul Oberjuerge. Holy $hit that man can write! And he fleshes out his thoughts brilliantly.

From his post: Becks-Bashers Do Galaxy Proud

AC Milan is, of course, Beckham’s real team, the one he wanted to play for so much that he bought himself out of his obligation to play the first half of the Major League Soccer season with the Galaxy. AC Milan, the serious soccer club in a serious soccer nation, the team he can’t wait to return to the moment he can ditch this motley crew of semi-pros in Los Angeles and get back over the pond to where fans appreciate a guy who looks good in a suit and wears a five-day growth of beard quite nicely and is really quite good at striking a sitting soccer ball (if not much else). Yes, get back to Europe, Sir David, and don’t come back. It is clear you are no longer required, or wanted.

Oberjuerge gives Beckham a scathing tongue-lashing while praising the Riot Squad for their booing.

I know this topic has been beaten to death in the media and blogosphere, but this one is well worth the read. Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Colin and Jem, your snarkiness made my day. :) We have the BEST readers on this blog!

CA Pete, I'm also hoping that we are drawn into the same group for WC. That WOULD be epic!
  • I have the same question as Laurie. If it's a calculated move on his part to force an early transfer, then I'm half-inclined to support calling his bluff and forcing him to live through a full five years of what he seems to now see as his personal football hell. Then again, I really don't want to see the Galaxy miss the playoffs, again, and if that means letting the S.S. Beckham sail off permanently to Serie A, then so be it--and the sooner the better. As a Genoa fan, it would just give me even more reason to hate Milan.

One thing I do know: I so, soooooo hope that the U.S. and England are drawn into the same group in South Africa next year. That would be epic!

La Galaxy Shirt's posts go right up there with "Soccer in America is a niche sport," "Landon Donovan can't cut it in Europe," and my favorite, "the MLS is a pub league."

Thanks for the newsflash, La Galaxy Shirts. That cunning insight is probably why you're selling shirts and not writing in-depth analysis for the LA Times...

Due to the brilliant insight on la galaxy shirt's post, I feel the sudden need to click on his link and buy a shirt...
  • He is trying to make it impossible for him to stay at Galaxy, he is desperate for a move it was the wrong time in in his career to move stateside and he has regretted the move ever since.
  • Also: Wow. Is Beckham emotionally tone deaf or what? Is he so desperate to get out of LA that he WANTS people to hate him? Or is he just completely self-obsessed? http://www.latimes.com/sports/...

Agreed! With some of his (Paul's) comments I felt like the scales were falling from my eyes. He has a way of making the situation so clear.
  • This one and the Dan Loney post should be required reading for anybody who doesn't understand what all the fuss is about.
