Thoughts 10 Days Out From The Galaxy Season Opener
By: NathanHJ | March 12th, 2009If you are like me, then you have March 22nd circled in red on your calendar, are making plans for a brunch of gumbo at the Creole restaurant in one of the strip malls by the the Home Depot Center, and turning down offers of a free weekend birthday/wedding anniversary combo getaway to Ojai all in anticipation of the Galaxy’s season opener that Sunday.
If you are like me you are a futbol fan, an MLS fan, and a Los Angeles Galaxy fan. And possibly a bit off-kilter, but really that’s between me, my wife, and my pharmacist. Oh joyous pharmacist, how I love the little colored bottles you hand out to me. They really help with the ADD – hey! Shiny!
Where was I?
Right. March 22nd, the first Sunday of the 2009 MLS season. If you are reading this, I certainly hope you have read the Galaxy season preview that Jen labored over for hours, so that you could casually swing by and read it in 10 minutes. That’s how much she loves you. However, she doesn’t love you enough to stop me from posting, so I guess you win some, you lose some.
I read it, because that’s how much I love Jen. She got me thinking about returning players to watch and new impact players. I’ve got two. Bryan Jordan and Mike Magee.
I saw Mike Magee play in the “championship” match of the PanPacific Championship. He came off the bench and had an immediate impact on the game. Of course he was replacing Ely Allen who is no longer with the club, although Laurie at the Seattle Sounders blog says he’s trying to catch on there. Frankly, they can have him. We don’t need another project and its nice to see someone calling the Galaxy personnel shots who can see the same thing.
But Magee, who has started intermittently in New York, is an MLS veteran even though he’s, like, 12, and that experience showed immediately on the field. He was aggressive, he was confident, he made the smart plays, and he showed good vision. He’s also fast and for a preseason game his finishing was pretty sharp. He did score twice, after all. The Galaxy’s recently weak left side can get a tremendous boost with him in the line-up and the thought of him combining with Eddie Lewis is simply glorious. Not that I know how that would work in a 4-4-2 with a healthy Todd Dunivant, but that’s why someone like Bruce Arena gets paid the big bucks while I write this blog.
Speaking of getting people on the field, what about Bryan Jordan? Yes, he’s injured, too. Just like Duni, Lewis, Buddle, and David Beckham (chuckle). But when he was on the field at the end of last year he brought bite, speed and aggressiveness. He didn’t burn up the back of the net, but I got the feeling that if he could get his finishing on track he’d have a breakout 2009. If that happened you could see a Galaxy squad with depth at striker, something I haven’t seen in years. Arena would have to wrestle with getting Landon, Buddle, and Jordan on the field at the same time. If he can adjust to the MLS game.
So what might a starting lineup look like with healthy players but no underwear model? Bearing in mind I have no idea what’s going on regarding the backline it could look like this:
Donovan – Buddle
Lewis – Kirovski/Miglioranzi – Kovalenko – Klein
Dunivant – Valentin/Sanneh – Gonzalez – Franklin
But what about a 3-5-2? Not that we really have the centerback for this, but getting all those midfielders in the game makes me salivate.
Magee – Buddle
Lewis – Donovan – Jordan
Kovalenko – Klein
Dunivant – Gonzalez – Franklin
Going through this is kinda crazy, actually. I’m not used to having so many viable options to plug into so many different positions. I’m sure that those of you who have actually had the chance to see the team train will have ideas about what a viable starting lineup would look like, so you should put those ideas into the comments.
In fact you should feel free to add whatever thoughts you have at this point, 10 days before the Galaxy’s season starts. Add your comments below.

Not only is Ely Allen trying out here in Seattle, so is Mike Randolph. But we have a whole bunch more players trying out than we do roster spots, so we’re going to have more than a few disappointed players come final roster day.

Gotta believe there’s a spot for Randolph on some team. He just needs someone to build confidence in him (and help him with crosses) and he can contribute.
Having said that I like the left side of the Galaxy for the first time in years. Yes Eddie Lewis is like 90, but with Duni, Lewis, and Magee, there’s decent quality up and down. Magee needs to step it up a notch in order to live up to his potential, but considering all the recent options on that side of the field, it feels like an embarassment of riches.

Looks like the coaches are really trying to hold out as long as they can to make final decisions on who exactly gives them the best over-all chances for making all the way through this season effectively. No other choice being that a team can only have 24 players where 4 out of the 24 must be developmental.
NathanHJ,
I have no idea right now on how to come up with a starting line-up… Yes, we just finished giving contracts to AJ Delagarza, Yohance Marshall, Kyle Patterson, and Josh Saunders. But, the LA Galaxy has also invited three (3) other trialists to practice and scrimmage with the team: Joe Germanese (M-D, D-M; Duke University & New England Revs) ; Dan Gargan (D, D-M; San Jose, Colorado, and Chivas USA) ; and, Jamie Franks (M, M-F; Wake Forest). So, that means if these guys fill certain roles that Bruce is looking for on the field… then, we’re looking at three more guys that would have to be let go of or traded. To me, I kind of like the fact that Bruce & Dave are still tinkering and experimenting to see what makes the most sense and will give the LA Galaxy better options for the entirety of this season. Very curious to see how the team will perform in the Phoenix Classico this Saturday.Posted from

Charles, Sigi in Seattle is doing exactly the same thing. Just when I think, “Okay, he’s narrowing it down,” he brings in more trialists! Maddening, but hopefully worth it in the end.

Just putting Klein in right mid and backing him with Franklin is a major improvement. Putting Kovalenko in the middle will hopefully help too. I’m very curious to see how Gonzalez and Ricketts do. I think those two could make a huge difference.
Nathan, the 4-4-2 lineup you put forward makes the most sense to me.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the Gals are going to be rubbish again this season. You can spin it anyway you like, but rubbish is rubbish.

Oh Stephan go to a different blog you rubbish poster! and you better be from Europe. I’m sick of that shit, Euro snobs hating on our league because its not the Premier Ship, well we know its not so shut up!
Ok, now that I got that off my chest, does anyone know if the game tomorrow vs Chitown is going to be shown anywhere? I do not see any tv listings for it and couldn’t find if they would be streaming it.

Justin, I don’t know about video but I think they’re
going to have the “radio” broadcast on the Galaxy site.At the risk of further inflaming the BS (that’s Beckham
Saga, really); do you like the fact we’re not “real
football people” because we refuse to buy into the bs

I understand why he wants to stay there for their season and I am sure everyone else understands that also, and that is not why I will boo his ass at the first home game. The reason is how he did this, he was shady with the whole deal. If he would have come out and said listen Galaxy and the fans I need to go and play in Europe until after the World Cup, then I will be all yours no more friendlies, only the Galaxy. I can say most of us would have been ok with that, loaned him out for the two seasons to AC Milan and used his DP spot on someone else. By time he would come back the rules could be different with the salary cap. He just doesn’t need to try and pull the wool over our eyes.

Justin, first I agree — not as much about the shadiness as about the entire deal, but as I read through your comment I also enjoyed thinking about the number of lawyers, agents, publicists and news outlets that would have lost a fortune if things were done so simply.
Not to single out Milan most European clubs depend on transfer/loan/trade rumors for way more coverage than post-match press conferences. I can’t say either MLS or Galaxy are much more transparent in certain areas, but at least during the last couple of months Milan tortured this one down to the wire. (Plus, an unsatisfying deal was then had by all!).
