Ty Harden’s Leaving Soccer!?!
By: Laurie | February 15th, 2008
This one breaks my heart. After just one year, Ty Harden (who, in case you’ve forgotten, came from my grad school alma mater, University of Washington) is leaving. Not just the Galaxy, not just MLS, but the game itself.
Ouch. Last year, Ty came in early in the season and worked hard to fill a gaping void in central defense. Frank Yallop put trust in him, and Ty stepped up and became a regular starter. With a little seasoning, he had the potential to be really, really good.
I’ll never forget watching him in the Chelsea game last year as he went one on one with striker Didier Drogba. I expected him to get smoked, but he held out, causing Drogba to commit the foul trying to get by him. Drogba probably made more in that ninety minutes than Ty made in an entire year.
And now Ty is apparently leaving, and nobody knows why.
From Billy Witz at The Daily Breeze:
Ty Harden, who went from unknown rookie to a fixture in the Galaxy’s backline last season, has walked away from the sport, telling the team he planned to pursue a business opportunity with his family, according to sources.
It was unclear if that opportunity was related to his father Robert’s position as CEO for Goodwill Industries in Reno, Nev., or if Harden plans to resume his career at any point.
But the indication from two sources is that Harden is retiring. Messages left with each of his parents Thursday were not returned.
“I’m not sure what’s going on, other than it’s personal reasons and we know he’s in good health,” Galaxy forward Edson Buddle said. “As far as I know, nothing’s finalized, but I don’t know a lot.”…
“Everybody’s kind of wondering what’s going on,” said one teammate, who has left a message for Harden that hasn’t been returned. “Everybody thinks the world of him. He could go very far in soccer. I’m as anxious as you are to find out what’s going on.”
University of Washington coach Dean Wurzberger, who coached Harden in college, said he was surprised when he learned last week that Harden had walked away. He recalled seeing Harden in December, and said he was looking forward to the new season.
Like I said, this breaks my heart. Ty was the one the foreign papers always chose to contrast with Beckham: both of them blond and talented. One paid millions, the other pennies. And now he’s walking away.
Is this a sign of something seriously wrong with the Galaxy and its Beckhamania, or with MLS and its dirt wages? Or is it just one kid’s decision about his life? I’m hoping we find out more soon.

Wow, just wow. Well, our defense looks like will be different from last season, as it looks like Xavier isn’t doing too well in preaseason. And we just reacquired Vanney from DC! He was a Galaxy original! And it looks like Franklin, from my alma mater, CSUN!, will be starting wih all these developments.

I got distracted by the Ty Harden thing and forgot about Vanney! Will put a post up on that one shortly.

good luck to Ty.

Yup, you got Vanney who DC had no intentions of resigning. We got Quavas Kirk. I really wonder what type of Jedi mind-tricks Kevin Payne is pulling.

Hey Laurie - Andrea Canales has a nice conspiracy theory about this you may enjoy.

Wow. I hope this is a good decision for him, made from a positive place. He sure will be missed.
And how exciting that Vanney is back! He is a GREAT left back! I’ve got no worries when someone takes him on in the back third.

That is sad. I hope it works out for him. (And he’s from my alma mater, too.)

Well with Jazic, Randolph, Babayaro, and Vanney all left-backs, I think we’re going to have some trades/adjustments. I think Jazic would be welcomed at Toronto FC. Then Randolph could be moved up to left-wing. But Babayaro will probably start at left-back over Vanney, so can Vanney play any other defensive positions (fill in for Xavier or Harden)?

I don’t think Vanney has played left back for a while, certainly didn’t at DC and I believe he was prefered centrally in Colorado as well. The major complaint about Vanney - he’s slow and expensive. His contract ended last year so it will need to be negotiated down but it was about 230,000 and you have to wonder how far down he’s willing to go.

Oh, Melissa, that Andrea Canales column made my day. I would SO love to see Ty up here in 2009!!!!

Word on the street is that he’s suffering from depression. I have no idea if this is true, but if so, that’s sad. It can definitely ruin your passion for life. I hope he finds happiness.
(I don’t believe the conspiracy theory at all.)

All the articles I’m reading are saying that Ty wanted to go into philanthropy and that he could not help people enough if he continued playing soccer as a profession. The Galaxy has done some charity work, but apparently not enough for Ty. It’s sad.

He’s pulling an Alexi Lalas. You “retire” for a year and then you get to play for another team. Unfortunately, it probably won’t work. Harden doesn’t have the rep that Lalas had.
