Watching the Galaxy Game? Leave Comments
By: Laurie | April 13th, 20081-1 Halftime
My Canadian channel decided to show freakin’ curling. Yes, curling. I ran through every single channel on my TV — 002 through 999 — in hopes that it would show up somewhere. No such luck. (I do this once a year during Galaxy season, searching for games. You know, just in case my cable company has miraculously given me the channel I want. It’s probably not a bad thing, once a year, to remind myself of how much crap there is on TV.)
After hitting 999 with no luck I headed back to the computer in hopes of finding a pirate stream. I eventuallly found a SopCast feed of the Telefutura broadcast in the 30th minute. Color me happy.
First, that TFC goal was painful — entirely against the run of play. I’d have to see it again to be sure, but it looked like our defense got complacent and moved too far up and wasn’t prepared for the counter.
Second, did Landon win the “Worst sitter miss of the year” award or what? When he beats the keeper and all the defenders, 99% of the time he makes the goal. Ouch.
Third, at least he made up for it with the equalizer. That was pretty.
1-1 at the half, with Galaxy dominating the part of the game I saw.
Go Galaxy!!!

I thought that Buddle shot was in. Damn, again.

For controlling most of the game, this one hurts! Donovan just couldn’t finish on some great chances, one being basically an open net. I really thought we would be able to play in the heat better, but TFC actually started playing better in the second half. Where are those Cuban U23 players :p

Laurie, I thought the shot from Buddle was in as well, but no cigar- deflated again. It did have some power on it though. I sound like a stuck record but I still want to see Wicks in. I don’t know if he could have saved any of the three goals but I would have liked to see him try.

We got really lucky on that no-call Beckham foul. He should have been red carded. We can’t finish for shit and our keeper sucks. I’ve seen enough from Cronin, get him back to the bench where he belongs. Lets see how Wicks does.

I can’t believe they didn’t call the Vanney foul! He was blatantly knocked down! That goal should not have counted. I was so pissed. And it was reeeeaaaalllllyyy hot there. Luckily our seats started to become shaded in the second half, but the field must have been excruciatingly hot. Chris Klein looked like the heat was a bit too much toward the end. And I loved how pissed Landon looked. When he scored his goal and then didn’t celebrate, it was almost a “I don’t need you guys to not finish for me anymore, I’m going to score this effing goal myself” moment.

Maybe Donovan was pissed at himself too, he got as much service as anyone else that didn’t finish. I think it was great that he did score but if he’s the only one capable, this is going to be a long season. It’s already a long season. I wish those guys luck, or maybe that the three Cubans can shoot — anyone hear more about how they’re doing?

It’ll be interesting to see how the Cuban players work out. I remember reading somewhere they looked good in the game against the our U23 squad.

They did look good againsnt the U-23s. Their keeper especially was amazing. Can’t remember the other two, though.

If you’d like to see what the MLS season looks like using the “single table” perspective, plus access to other team/league breakdown info follow the link below. This single table perspective provides a better handle on what’s going on than the silly East/West tables used by MLS. Interesting note - the Galaxy and DC United have identical records including goals scored and goals allowed. We are not alone in our struggles.

Yeah this is a really tough loss, but with all the misses its just the way it was going. 88th min. and old Pete and Vanney let it go, and Pete wasn’t in that f’in long. If I remember right his f up led to them getting possession and then Vanney oh Vanney yeah it could have been a foul but Beckhams no call before that should have been a PK and they would have went up by a goal then, so not sure what to think. I do think that Vanney needs to take a seat and Julian can get a chance in there. I would rather have us get rid of that money and use it for younger guys. They might not be as smart on the field and they might make mistakes but they will learn. I would also rather have the speed back there to catch up with guys and not get blown by, hopefully Ruud signs the Cuban defender on trial and we can get rid of a high price salary player. Such a disappointing game though ahhhh makes me want to scream.

Justin, this is one the problems with Beckham. When extremely frustrated he can get desperate enough to be a liability on defense. Either with something like last night, or a bad tackle for a foul on someone else or injury to himself. I’m surprised that he’s been so easily frustrated on this team. He knew what to expect, has cautioned patience from everyone else and has always been a “settling” influence on younger players. Maybe even an adult brain can’t always over-ride the hate to lose kid. That combined with having even more to prove after last season? Whatever, he needs to get over it quick. They may have to bring back the yoga.

This team sucks. I have been a Galaxy season ticket holder since the HDC arrived and I was at the TFC match. These past few years (since that dumbass Lalas has become GM) has been wrought with frustration. I honestly believe Becks is second guessing himself about this decision to play for LA. It was quite humorous to see Gullit walk away from the bench after TFC scored their 3rd goal and just hang out at the base of the stands. He was pissed. Hell we all were - how can anyteam lose to an 0-2 team like TFC. Sad that Donovan could not finish his first 3 shots - he could have had 5 goals. I don’t put the blame on Cronin - he can be exceptional when he wants to be, the defense stinks. Vanney is past his prime, same with Xavier - only Franklin & Klein (who should be playing midfield and not defense) are of any support - the blame is ALL ON LALAS. I am now going to bring a sign that reads “Fire Lalas” - because my voice alone does not get the message across.

I agree with TJ, Lalas has totally screwed up what should be a dynasty team. I was there Sunday and it was great to see Donavan take charge and put it in but at $900,000 a year thats what he is supposed to do. Yes the defence sucked but with all the missed oppertunities at the other end they should have covered the TFC goals

Diane, you crack me up! And you said exactly what I was thinking.
At one point in watching the game I yelled out (like a mom whose kid is in trouble), “Greg Vanney!!!” My husband looked at me kinda funny and yelled back to me, “Uhhh, Gary Coleman!!!” Then I had to laugh. It was the only time I laughed while watching the game.

I really don’t see how we can go wrong with these Cubans. They are supposedly pretty good. One is a keeper, one is a defender, not sure about the 3rd. They’ll be making developmental or minimum salaries and they want the want the opportunity to show their best. Cut one of our overpaid veterans who can’t do anything (that means NOT Mike Randolph!) and add these three guys.

Greg Vanney (I remember him from the good ole days, but…): Too. Damn. Slow. His is “experience” we no longer need. And NO, Cunningham did NOT foul him. Good call ref!
Steve Cronin: What. The. Frack?! Everyone says he’s good, he’s good, kinda like Dononvan….
Landycakes: Oh. My. Gawd. Open net… and… um, yeah, hated that.
Becks: The heat in Norte America is a real bitch, n’est ce pas? You know it’s bad at the HDC when the whole ground shimmers like that. Between that and the humiliation of the last part of the second half, it’s no wonder he pulled that horrible foul and should indeed have been carded… extremely generous, but out of line, ref!
Ely: Hang in there, kid. But dude, you were short like 99% of the time and you kept missing things. OK, you were nervous, now it’s over, next time “no think, do” glasshoppa.
When FSW cut me off at minute 68, I was grateful I tought enough to DVR DSN too, even though it bumped Galactica (frack!) before I saw it all. From 68 on, I put my head in the freezer to keep from overheating and screaming uncontrollably… no wait, my daughter reminded me I was doing that, and cussing in staccato half-finished epithets as I watched a match-that-should-have-been-glorious go all to shit. OMG, first Chelsea, now this… I’m going to shave my head and become a Chivas fan, dammit. Go Sunderland! *shite*

I’m still new enough to MLS to hesitate about criticizing players other than Beckham, who I’ve seen in Europe for a dozen years, but Lalas without question–from bad to worse. It sucks for all of these guys that they are set up for serious humiliation. If Becks regrets anything (something he claims never to do) it would probably be believing anything Lalas ever said to him. If the Galaxy had end to end talent that compared to the “top half of the table,” or whatever the MLS equivalent would be, fair enough. But Lalas probably didn’t include in his sales pitch “once we pay you we won’t be able to afford a defensive line, or etc, etc…”
Beyond the terrible affront to Galaxy fans, it’s much less fair to the rest of the team than to Becks, who knows what he’s capable of, to field a team with this many holes–especially after making the kind of claims Lalas has been making to the entire world…the ear of which he now has. For every story that holds Beckham responsible for the success or failure of the Galaxy, there are so many more, especially outside of the U.S., that mention his “usual excellent distribution” and then pick apart the rest of the guys. Laurie might have a maternal area for her boys, but each of them have their own moms who have to read that stuff. Sigh. Grrr.
If this is a home series against the league’s weakest teams shutting one’s head in the freezer might become a more and more attractive option to all concerned. Oh well, if “impossible is nothing” I’m setting my hopes on the Cubans.
BTW, JustJack, its never too late to become a Liverpool fan. Just send for songs if you need them

Side note, while i want to get rid of the old vets that suck (Vanney, I’m looking your way), I do not want to trade any young guys. Even if they are not yet developed, they can and should grow with the Galaxy. Look at Robbie Findley after one year. I know I mention that trade every 3rd post, but it still pisses me off. He is now a mid-level striker in this league and he could have been ours. We need to develop our young talent while getting some decent defenders and by mid-season we may be working together an winning like we were at the end of last season.
