Watching the RSL-Galaxy Game? Leave Comments

By: Laurie | May 3rd, 2008

Final Score
RSL 2-2 Galaxy

Espindola 7′ ; Beckham 35′, 40′
Deuchar 18′

All righty. Ten minutes to kickoff. I’m reading that Jazic is available. Will this affect the lineup?

I don’t think I’m going to liveblog this one. Maybe next week. But I will be actively commenting and hope you will too.

Neither of these teams is known for excellent defense, so let’s see some goals! Hopefully more for us than for them.

    I DEMAND MORE BECKHAM!!!

Why aren't the Galaxy games being played on ESPN2? Instead, they're playing figure skating, poker, LPGA, softball, arena football, and HS b-ball. I know soccer isn't popular here, but DAMN!!! Do we have to petition ESPN or MLS or someone else?
  • Diane
Mag, it would have been fun to get together to watch a match if we were close enough!
  • Mag, there's a glitch in the comment system. It will tell you that everybody else is in the country you're in. When I was in Ireland, so were all of you. :-)
  • Diane
Glen, I agree about the calls, refs might be getting too careful now about favoring the Galaxy, although this one was letting things go both ways at least for awhile. Beckham should been awarded the penalty, but it was tight and the ref might have looked at it as handing the Galaxy a goal -- still, he had the ball and was heading to an open net so that's no excuse...but we do see those called erratically everywhere. Gordon certainly deserved better protection in the end as well.

My computer isn't close enough to the TV to stop by while the match was on, but I was so depressed during the first 20 minutes that I almost stopped watching and came here to drown my sorrows. I'm glad they were able to get back in the game and get the point, but it's a little scary to see that the whole team is capable of playing as badly as they did coming out. No accuracy (including from the "best crosser in the world"), no energy, no possession, no plan. Oy VEY. HUGE relief when they perked up and started moving the ball around better, with some nice service into the box and good efforts on goal, but thought Gullit might have a stroke first.

Turf!!!! Even for plastic there's no excuse for that quality, from the ripples it looked like the old rug over concrete. Ball handling problems apart, American football players run on average 5 minutes per game, soccer football players shouldn't have to submit their bodies to that surface -- home or away sides.

    Definitely was NOT boring!

thanks for the updates of the game! and oh..HAPPY BIRTHDAY to David Beckham! guess he's giving himself a birthday present with the goals. ;)

No worries, Laurie... Of course, marriage & family - priority 1. Understand! Carry on! Glad that a few of us could keep you company on the blog during the game. Good night.
  • Charles, yes, I have MLSlive.tv. Thing is, my husband showed up five minutes into the second half after three days out of town. I DO have my priorities.

But I second how wonderful and inviting the actual grass looked after the Rice-Eccles field turf.
  • Glen
looks like a good crowd there too, glad to see the support
  • Glen
    they are looking good
  • charlesj27
Glen - you're so right! The grass looks so green, and soft - then, again I don't what the temperature is like at Buck Shaw stadium in Oakland. But, so far - the SJ defense is very good (tight!). I believe forming a very good defensive line is one of Yallop's specialties.
  • Glen
after watching the Galaxy play on turf, it's nice to see the field at the SJ stadium, real grass- what a concept
  • Glen
do mean the next Galaxy game, 'cause it's on HD Net
  • charlesj27
FCD Midfielders are much more "deep / solid" than SJ midfielders. Plus, FCD has fast runners in Kenny Cooper, Ricardinho, Arturo Alvarez, and Dax McCarty. But, right now, SJ is applying some good runs and pressure. SJ is indeed playing as they have to win. Good to see. I'm not trying to rub it in - just trying to fill you in as much as possible.
  • charlesj27
Laurie, SJ vs. FCD... Score is still 0 - 0. Don't you have MLSlive.tv through internet??? You can still watch it on-line if you are subsribed for this season.
  • Come on, San Jose!

The next game won't be available on any channels I can see. This pisses me off.
  • charlesj27
Question: Since Vanney has two accumulated yellow cards, so far - then, in how many more games will not those two yellow cards accumulated not be as vital / dangerous? I believe our guys did put fight back into this game... But, it's almost like Ruud, David, Landon, and Cronin has to be mad and yell - for the rest of the team to pick up their steam and start playing with more urgency and pressure. Next game is at home (HDC) against New York Red Bulls. If both Angel and Altidore are available and play... Oh-oh... again, we will have our work cut out for us!!!
  • charlesj27
It seemed that the last twenty minutes the game slowed down quite a bit for both teams. And, luckily we were abel to hold on to the tie! So, we still maintain our standing in the MLS Conference table (as well as, among our many doubters). I still think Ruud Gullit is still not happy with today's performance. Again, we knew it was going to be hard playing at Rice-Eccles, and, the RSL players know this turf and dimensions of the field a lot better than our players do. RSL had more corner kicks opportunity; but, shots-on-goals were about the same between the two teams.
  • Glen
Beckham can still draw a crowd.......
  • Glen
    it was fun Laurie
  • Glen
glad to see them get back into the game and start to show some desire, and of course Beckhams pair didn't hurt :p
  • charlesj27
Well... on the positive side we are still maintaining pressure. I just hope we don't get caught napping! Offensively, we are still pushing forward - but, just not cleanly or convincingly!
  • Thanks for keeping me company, Glen and Charles.
  • Glen
now we need FC Dallas to fall to SJ
  • I spent the entire stoppage time pacing.
  • Glen
good to come away with a point
  • Okay, the point. That's not a bad ending after the way it started.
  • Glen
    1 min.
  • Glen
that 1 point is looking good right now
  • Glen
    cheap shot taken on Gordon
  • Oooh, testosterone from Gordon.
  • Nice work by Cronin. That was defensively scary.
  • Glen
we've had some good chances just not finishing on them
  • Glen
I think your right on Rudd thinking the team doesn't have any depth.
  • I'm loving the Donovan hate on the corners.
  • Glen
    oh close again
  • The Gals are looking tired. I find Ruud's strategy of playing everybody the full 90 to be interesting. Shows that he doesn't think the team has any depth.
  • Glen
Klein ran him down, nice to see
  • Glen
hold on Galaxy....the ref seems to be leaning a little towards RSL
  • Hmm. The momentum seems to have switched to RSL again.
  • We're running out of attackers.
  • Now rubbing his quardicep.
  • Uh-oh. Gordon down holding his hamstring.
  • Robbie Findley in. This should be interesting.
  • Glen
dumb luck romando was in the right spot
  • Glen
    I can't believe it.........so close
  • Oh so close for Donovan!!
  • I really like the way Randolph moves with the ball at his feet, but he needs to work on his passing a bit.
  • Glen
I like seeing that from Donovan, aggression.
  • My heart rate goes up every time RSL enters our final third.
  • No kidding. Gordon deserved that call.
  • Glen
    where's the call....
  • Glen
the game is flowing for both sides
  • Good save by Cronin.
  • Glen
is this ref ever gonna call something for the Galaxy
  • Glen
the turf is such an advantage for RSL
  • RSL is definitely more knowledgeable about how the ball is going to respond to this turf. They know where the bounces are going.
  • Glen
they're making some things happen, good sign
  • Glen
    nice shot from Vanney
  • Gordo shoulda scored with that header
  • charlesj27
Oh, please - NOOOO!!!! Don't let Beckham be hurt!!! Okay, Cronin made some very important saves! Okay, it's still 2 - 2. Man, we need to try to keep the ball in our end of the field. RSL completely is more knowledgeable about their placement in their home field. I think LA Galaxy is trying to see if they can feed the ball either to Landon or Alan?
  • Glen
ok, wishful thinking on my part :p
  • Glen
I think that was a PK, he Beckham and not the ball
  • Whoa, he's back in. And our defense is still sucking.
  • Glen
    No.....damn
  • Oh. No. Beckham is down. He looks hurt.
  • Glen
    corner coming up
  • Glen
he was left wide open by himself, come on Defense
  • Glen
    nice save from cronin!!
  • Glen
we'll see, the last couple of games the 2nd half has been good for us
  • charlesj27
Wow! Exciting game - so far; but, hated the way our Galaxy lacked cohesiveness and urgency the first twenty minutes of the match! Guys, does playing on turf cause this much problems as we saw in the first twenty for our LA Galaxy. I mean I know that our LA Galaxy got nice & cozy playing the first several games at home. But, we're still making communication and catch-up mistakes in the back-line. Thanks God, for Sean Franklin! When I saw Steve Cronin yelling at the back-line, it brought back flashbacks of last year with Joe Cannon yelling at the back-line! I do know this - Man, oh man - that ball bounces all over the place on turf!
  • Either one of those Beckham goals could be goal of the week.
  • And our defense STILL sucks.
  • No RSL goal! YEAH!!
  • Now we got ourselves a horse race.
  • Glen
    Goal of the week......maybe
  • Glen
    yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
  • YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! Beckham all the way!!!
  • Glen
    Goal again
  • Glen
they making some things happen now
  • Glen
    noooooooo
  • Glen
class goal.....from Beckham, maybe this will give them the spark they need
  • Glen
    GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Yesyesyes!!! Our first scoring opportunity and Beckham puts it in!!
  • 31 minutes and we've given up five corners.
  • Glen
I can live with a loss if they show a strong effort, but their not showing any spark right now, no desire
  • Glen
Donovan touched the ball, had a throw in :p
  • Has Donovan even touched the ball?
  • Glen
this might be a hard game to watch....
  • Oh. My. Lord. I don't believe this. Of course the second goal comes right after the announcer says, "I'd like to see the Galaxy back four start to assert themselves."
  • Glen
    again, crap
  • Glen
that'll be nice and no more football lines every where
  • They just said the RSL stadium was 70% done, so they won't have the advantage next season.
  • Glen
they just showed Rudd and he was just shaking his head...why does MLS allow turf instead of grass
  • Especially this turf. It's like giving RSL a couple of extra players on the field.
  • Glen
    I hate turf.....
  • Glen
    crap...............
  • Dammit, dammit, dammit. I don't think this is going to be our game. The team just doesn't have the hang of the turf bounces.
  • Good save by Cronin. That was scary.
