Watching US v. Guatemala
By: jen | August 20th, 2008Anyone else?
I’m looking forward to seeing Eddie Lewis in a Galaxy uniform. Even on the left midfield he’s going to help calm the flow through the midfield down while making smart and timely passes.
And if Pando tackles Donovan again . . . I don’t want him or Lewis injured please.
And what’s with the lighting? I know that Central American fields often leave much to be desired, but does the lighting on this field actually meet FIFA regulations? I can barely see Tim Howard.
If you’re watching, leave comments.

I just want to say its an embarrasment that the United States played so badly against Guatemala. We obviously outplayed you. Congratulations on taking advantage on one huge mistake. honestly was the hand ball inside the area not a penalty? was the accidental clash of heads a red card? did the ref call a foul when Howard dropped the ball? Please answer this

Yeah, the US attack was pretty dismal except for that one chance and maybe a couple others, but a win is a win and I’ll take it. The hand ball was kicked into his arm that was already flailed out. It could have been a pk…but the ref either didn’t see it or decided it was more ball to hand than hand to ball. As for the “accidental” clash of heads, the Guatemalan player clearly came in too hard too late and there may have been an elbow as well. And yes, I think the ref called a foul when Howard dropped the ball.

Laurie / Jen – gosh, you gals just bust me up some times. Just reading your comments back and forth – it’s like I’m virtually imagining Will & Grace. Thanks for the play-by-play of the match. In all actuality it was more fun reading both of your comments than watching that “dead-beat” moves/passes from the US through the midfield. Once again, Tim Howard saved our bacon on many occasions. Was Landon even seriously playing in today’s match? Carlos Bocanegra was all over this match today. Michael Bradley looked like he was going to faint and in serious need of IV-fluids. Good ol’ Pablo (or shall I say, “Thud – you feel that? you like that?) It was quite humorous to see Frankie get frustrated on the right wing.
Andres… Guatemala was seriously burning past us on the wings. Many of their through balls came through across the wings. I understand your points and concerns – Guatemalan team clearly showed more fight, intensity, & spirit. And, yes… I could see Head Coach Maradiaga at the end was ready to come on the field and introduce his clipboard to the ref’s smug face.
I’m glad for the US team – but, this was not a good performance from the US team of stellar futbol.Posted from

Umm…thanks?
(Am I Will, or am I Grace? On second thought, don’t answer that.)

Didanyone see the replay of the so called “elbow”??? They colided in mid air head to head, Cabrera and Lewis. It was not a red card!!!!!! Guatemala dominated thye majority of the Game. The refereeing left much to be desired letting calls go left and right for both teams. You know it is definately a bad referreed game when the ref influences the outcome of the game and possibly this round of qualifying results that greatly. Some people claim the Trinitarian Jack Warner’s hand is somehow involved in this. Little by little, I start believing it.

i hate will and grace
Ill go with Laverne and Shirley.
And seriously – no matter how dirty, we looked like garbage out there. Hopefully, this will serve as a wake up call.

I’m from Guatemala, and you´re right, but our counries are very different, the smallest state of U.S. have more ihabitants than our entire country…

Rob, I would have liked to see the replay in super-slo-mo from a good angle. His elbows were definitely up, but I was never able to see what part of him struck Eddie in the head.
I was actually glad to see all the blood after that — it frequently means that the skin took more of the blow that the skull. Scar, but no brain damage. (Meaning he’ll be good to go for us. Is that a good thing?)

I guess we’ve missed our calling Laurie. We belong on a sitcom!
And you are definitely Grace, and probably Shirley. I kinda want to be Squiggy. “Hello!”

Yes, Guatemala is much much smaller than the United States, but it DOES have more population than all but 5 U.S. states (California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois) in case anyone was curious like me…

No way, Dave. I want to be Mork.

Bad Game, BAD LIGHTING, Bad officiating – must have been MLS officials. Really bad tackle on Lewis – from the many replays that I saw – the Guatemalan player was late with the header and looked more like playing Lewis than the ball itself. The fact that blood was drawn, I believe sold to the official that a red car was deserved. But hell, those officials obviously come from the training school of MLS officiating.
The lighting at that stadium was pitiful – did they not pay their electric bill or replace a few bulbs?
Pitiful. But, a win is a win especially on the road. Sucks for the LA Galaxy getting a player that is now damaged goods! Such has been this season.Posted from

Laverne and Shirley for sure. Although, personally, since I had kids I’ve often wondered what I ever thought was so funny about the Lucy show…AND where the f*ck was Ethel when you needed her
!Elbow was up. I kept saying head wounds bleed to myself, but I was really happy when I saw both eyes because that’s where it looked like the elbow hit. People have to learn to keep their arms down, if not to prevent injuries than at least to prevent send-offs and/or spot kicks awarded for hand balls.

I saw most. Not great. I still think Ching is a great MLS player and poor international. I also repeat again that I think playing Donovan in the midfield is a mistake. Pair him with Altidore up front and you have a real threat. Put Dempsey in the middle to give speed to the buildup and add an attacking threat. Why don’t they do that?

Diane – please do not hate on I LOVE LUCY – one of the greatest shows ever. Ethel was too busy making fun of Fred off camera to ever be a good bestfriend to Lucy!
btw – Ethel is a great name for a kid if you dont want her to ever date. So I may go ahead and do that if I have a daughter . .

Dave, you and Laurie can duke it out over Mork, but I want to be Jonathan Winters! And “Ethel Martinez” is a great name!
Diane, I was telling myself the same thing about head wounds because it looked really fleshy. Grateful for his two eyes remaining too. I wonder how many Galaxy fans were watching the match thinking, “Oh God no! Don’t let him be injured before he shows up in LA!”

YAY! Eddie Lewis Will he be on the bench for the Chicago game? Hopfully

Dave, I love love LOVE Lucy! It’s just that once I had kids — starting the lot with twins, a “Lucy moment” in itself — it seemed that all of the things I thought farcical on the show were absolutely and completely realistic, and where was Ethel when *I* needed her. (Fortunately I have had some wonderful Ethels in my life and hope I’ve returned the favor!). I’m still eye the oven now and then, btw, to make sure a six foot loaf doesn’t pop out — what was that anyway?
