We Don’t Suck the Worst Anymore!
By: jen | October 13th, 2008I’ve been reduced to describing our beloved Galaxy in higher and lower levels of suckiness. We used to suck the worst, but now San Jose has laid claim to that title after the Galaxy’s win last night over Colorado.
Woohoo.
Although I’ve become a frustrated and often cynical fan, last night’s game was a joy to watch. Bryan Jordan was all over the pitch using his speed to create scoring chances. Edson Buddle showed off some unlikely finesse for a big guy. And Brandon McDonald hit a gorgeous 35 yard shot into the right upper V. Talk about a confidence boost for a rookie player, and a defensive midfielder at that. Make sure you vote for him for goal of the week.
I believe we still have a chance to make the playoffs. We need to win at least one, if not both, of our last two games. Keep rooting for Colorado and Dallas to lose. If they stay in their current points standings and we pick up 3 to 6 points then we’ve got a decent shot.
So did you see the game? What are your thoughts? I’m tired of hoping against the odds, but I’ll still suit up on Saturday in my 2005 era Donvan t-shirt and hope for a win against Houston. Houston has been unbeaten in the past nine games. However, they play on Wednesday as well as Saturday, so maybe they will be tired?
We have Landon back for this game as he was released from the USMNT for the Trinidad and Tobago match Wednesday. Beckham was suspended from the Colorado game due to an accumulation of yellow cards, but he spent his suspension at Wembley. Becks remains with the English National Team for their Wednesday match against Belarus, but I suspect he will jet home and be available Saturday as well.

Jen, Becks is going to have to serve his suspension in Houston. According to league rules apparently a suspension only counts if a player is “available for league play.” But the guys looked great last night — we tuned in late and had some nice surprises!

Just to clarify, we need to win both of our final games to have any chance at all for the playoffs. If we lose either game, we are mathematically eliminated. If we win one and tie one, we still have a chance, but that chance is somewhere south of Ralph Nader’s presidency hopes.
By the way, I was at the game on Sunday and it was such a satisfying win (especially with two Rapids fans sitting next to me). Brandon’s goal was truly jaw-dropping! As soon as it happened, I turned to my wife and said, “There’s your goal of the week!” Looks like I’ll be right.

That McDonald goal was gorgeous. I had just been telling a friend that I wished McDonald played more when he took that amazing shot. I wish we took more shots like that from outside the box; it really adds to the offensive arsenal.
I hope that this win without Beckham will be a confidence boost for the younger players on this team.
In a positive note for next season: based on Walcott’s play for England, I don’t think Beckham is long for the English national team. That means a distraction free Beckham for us next year.

Did you mean to say that Alan Gordon had finesse?

Great win. I really like this lineup for next week(scratch Gordon for Donovan, obviously).
We can only hope that Houston will play with little energy or enthusiasm, as they have pretty much clinched the top spot and don’t really need the win.
Also, since I hate the Houston Dynamo, I love the fact that Beckham has yet to grace them with his presence and give them the attendance boost. It’s completely coincidental, but I think it’s a great way to stick it to them.

Awesome Colin! I never thought of that.

Well shoot that Beckham can’t play against Houston.
And thanks for the correction. They need 4 to 6 points to have a chance, but really they need 6 points.
No, no. Not Gordon. You may beg to differ but I did see some decent footwork and holding ability from Buddle.

I completely misread the time and missed the game entirely. Now I am kicking myself.

What the Crap!? Great game, but I had to watch it at 9:00 PM? Wait… even later after Dodger postgame!? WTF? I know that the Dodgers are on the doorstep, but please, the Galaxy game was already being tape delayed on the wretched Prime network, but to just push it back because it must get such a small audience is just hideous and annoying for that small audience!
Great win though, regardless! Does anyone else think that the MLS should just drop the “Conferences”? What’s the point? If they are just going to grab the top 8 teams, jut make one conference, it has not meaning.
