We Got a Win in SuperLiga

By: Laurie | July 27th, 2007

Confession: I still don’t have a firm understanding of

A) What SuperLiga actually is, or
B) Why the Galaxy is playing in it

But never mind that. We WON!! We won a game!! Against a solid Mexican team!! We beat CF Pachuca 2-1 Tuesday night! And we did it without Beckham!

This is a hopeful, happy me you’re seeing right now.

Goals were by Alan Gordon and Landon Donovan.

Yallop said: “I think the whole emotional build-up to David arriving, and I’m not blaming him, but he finally arrived and we played poorly against Tigres then came out against Chelsea and decided to have a go, and we did and hopefully that’s the start of something we can play like.

“Tonight in spells we showed what we can do. We moved the ball pretty sharply but we missed some good chances too and we should have scored some more goals tonight.”

I have known all along that this team was not as bad as they’ve been playing. (Right? Tell me I’m right.)

Alas, my hour at Starbucks is running out and I don’t have time to do more research. Feedback, please, from those of you who saw the game? Was it as promising as it sounds?

Yes and no. It’s promising that we were finally able to hit the net when it mattered but quite frankly we were outshot and outplayed for most of the 90 minutes. If it wasn’t for Joe Cannon and Abel Xavier, we would have lost 4-2 at least.

And how many sitters can we let Pavon miss before we fess up to him being a bad buy?

I agree with Chad’s overall assessment. Pachuca had the run of play for most of the first half and about half of the second half. Xavier played out of his mind for the entire game and was my pick for MOTM.

We won through grit and determination and heart. Not so much playing style.

BUT! If this had been just 3 weeks ago, the Galaxy would have folded like a 5-year old playing Texas Hold ‘Em. They didn’t and not only that, they started to play smart futbol, containing the Pachuca attack and counterattacking. They even strung together a couple of sequences of very pretty one-touch passing in the attack.

Give this team another 2-3 weeks to get all the pieces used to each other and they will be very dynamic and no longer a joke.

Unlike Chad, my jury is still out on Pavon. He has a rich history and he’s just getting new to the league. My sense is that he thrives on good service, which could be just around the corner. But unless he starts to put it in the net he’ll be gone next year.

Gordon scored, but I wasn’t impressed. He’s still coming back from injury so I’ll give him a little slack, but he’s a lumbering ox with little creativity and no touch. Think of a slow awkward Taylor Twellman without vision and you’ve got Gordon as he plays right now.

Man, the more I see how they could play, the more I’m excited to see Beckham integrate into the team.

Pachuca is the best team in North America. Sure, they are in pre-season form but they had most of their regulars. Summary of Pachuca:
Winners of the CONCACAF Champions Cup aka best club team in CONCACAF
Winners of Mexican league spring season
Winners of Copa Sudamericana 2006 aka South American UEFA Cup

It was a great achievement and a great confidence booster, at least for us fans. If they continue playing like this, they have a chance of making the playoffs. The defense was SOLID, without Xavier and Cannon Pachuca could have easily scored 3 or more. We have a lot to work on, but the future looks bright.

AJ, believe it or not, in my mail today was a request from Alexi Lalas’s assistant with logo attached requesting that we switch. So I guess if I want to suck up to Galaxy management I probably should forward it to Bob and the gang, eh?
