What Are The Chances That Cobi Jones Will Be Back?

By: Laurie | August 22nd, 2007

jones-cobi-retire.jpgI can’t be the only one wishing that Cobi Jones’ last year was going differently. Somehow I don’t think this was what he expected when he planned his last year. He probably thought about Beckham’s arrival, and how it would motivate the team, and how they’d achieve the success they couldn’t reach last year…

Sadly, things don’t always work out as planned. I’ve recently found myself thinking, “I wonder if he could do this one more year?” Apparently I’m not the only one.

In an interesting article, Class Act Can Take A Well-Deserved Bow (and does that title make anybody else smile?) they talk about just this possibility.

Asked at what point during the off-season he would try to convince Jones to return for another season, Galaxy vice president and GM Alexi Lalas laughed and said, “That would be November.”

Jones, despite the lure to play a full season with David Beckham in 2008, says that likely won’t happen.

“It would depend on my body, how it feels. I’m not as young as I used to be,” Jones said. “I have to weigh my options in everything I want to do postcareer and within the soccer community.

“I’ve already got a lot of people now, players and fans, telling me to come back one more year. We’ll see. As Juergen Klinsmann once told me, never rule anything out. It’s definitely a situation that would have to be discussed at the end of the season. I’m open to it, but I’m not planning on it. I’m 99 percent sure I’m retiring.”

Those who have watched Cobi Jones throughout his career are sure to be holding on to that 1 percent chance of him returning next season.

A one percent chance that he’ll be back, but a 100% chance that he deserved better than this season.

So…well, we can hope, right?
