But I'm calling foul on using the scrabble legend here. Link to the Sunderland Sex Tapes (or any number of witnessed, plausible, or at least not paid for stories). This one hits two sore spots, 1) Beckham takes mentoring younger players really seriously, much more than would be considered simply sporting,and he's really, really generous about it. Same with setting an example for kids. He's known everywhere outside of the U.S. (just because that's where he's known, not because we're dim) for showing up early and staying late. 2) When that particular Beckham strays story came out, the guy's wife was pregnant with his first kid and he was still getting death threats following the '98 world cup. The scrabble part was worth a laugh if it wasn't so cruelly timed. The fact that it was disproved doesn't mean anything, people believe what they will. But for lots of us who followed the UK press at the time (to say nothing of the Beckhams) it's probably the one story we least enjoy seeing dragged out. And there's such a rich vein of similar material to choose from...! OK, I'm going back to read about Hope Solo again now.
