Yallop Says Beckham is “Not Ready for England”

By: Laurie | October 4th, 2007

Two facts:

1) England plays on the 13th and the 17th of this month in vital Euro qualifiers.
2) David Beckham is back in training.

Coincidence? What do you think?

Galaxy coach Frank Yallop is attempting to put rumors to rest by saying things like, “He’s not played a competitive game. It will be hard to be ready.” And, “”He’s not done anything with the team, it’s just nice to have him back out there. Now we need to see how he feels and just take it slowly.”

What did Beckham himself have to say? “It went well but we’ll have to see. I’m still restricted on many things but overall it felt good.”

Hmmm. This doesn’t sound like somebody saying, “I’m still too injured to play,” does it?

Guess we’ll see what happens when McClaren announces his squad.

If he’s not ready for England, he’s not ready for the Galaxy. I was honestly hoping he would be out for the rest of the season to give him enough time to fully recuperate. I’d hate to see him rushed back again only to be injured again.

It is interesting. If he plays for England, it’s because he really wants to be there, and he’ll do it with the knowledge that he’s screwing his club. I really hope he sits out the England qualifiers, not just because I’d kind of like to see England fail … but because if he does play for them, I can’t see it being anything but bad for the Galaxy and MLS.

He says, in his LA Times interview, that McClaren has stayed in touch during his rehab, so since he wasn’t named in the England squad — and players in worse shape were, see Michael Owen limping out of post-op — it seems Beckham would have been involved in that decision.
