Zidane and Figo Linked to Galaxy? Again?
By: Laurie | September 19th, 2007
That Zizou. He is such a tease. One day he is so totally retired, the next he’s meeting with Alexi Lalas.
Or so Corriere dello Sport (reported on Goal.com) tells us. And not only that, they also say that Portuguese winger Luis Figo is chatting with the Galaxy too.
(Want to see both Martha and me hyperventilate? Spread a dual rumor like this one.)
“Inter winger Luis Figo is once again being associated with a move to LA Galaxy after reportedly meeting with the MLS club’s supremo Alexi Lalas.
The Portuguese star had been tipped to follow his former Real Madrid team-mate David Beckham to Los Angeles during the summer but instead signed a one-year contract extension with the Nerazzurri.
Now the Corriere dello Sport is reporting that Figo and retired French legend Zinedine Zidane met with Galaxy supremo Alexi Lalas about a possible move to the American club.”
I’m thinking the Galaxy could get special DP and salary cap dispensation to bring them both on board with a special, one-time-only “we totally suck” allocation. Would you agree?

Well, wouldn’t that be sweet. And I like this reasoning, “Hey, they suck, why SHOULDN’T they get Zidane?”
I would assume that these international stars would not do well with Galaxy’s current management style (not coaching, management). Beckham has been very kind, but I wonder if these guys would put up with it.

That would be lame if the Galaxy get “special assistance” for having a bad year! They were already allowed to have their 2nd unofficial DP with Landy-cakes. Next year Candy-land Donovan becomes an official DP. And if the MLS gives LA “special assistance” of keeping said US International, then that isn’t fair. I would hate for there to be any rumor of MLS trying to give one team an unfair advantage over other teams. The Galaxy should have to play by the same rules as everyone else!!!!!

this is bogus. the galaxy are not worthy of figo or zidane. lalas is on his way out, and if this were true; leiwike would be talking not lalas. so let me get this correct totenham is not big enough for one former german coach but the galaxy are, tehn two of the best international footballers of the last ten years are also to take the field in the new/old blue and gold. where’s p.t. barnum and his friggin flea circus?

If it shakes down (and I still think that’s a big if) here’s how I see it happening.
- The league expands the number of DP slots from 1 to 2, maintaining the clause about being able to “trade” for an additional spot from another team (RBNY would have 3 spots and Chivas would have 1 from their earlier trade).
- Alexi’s Galaxy trade Landon Donovan to the expansion San Jose Earthquakes for one of their DP spots (and maybe a draft pick?)
- The Galaxy sign Figo and Zidane, and hopefully clean house of all their other six-figure-salaried players to build a real team around their new big three.
- Real Salt Lake yells “Hey, WE’RE the ones trying to cash in on Real Madrid!!”Honestly that’s the only way I can see it happening, because A) to make it possible, the league would need to alter the DP rule (ending the “experiment” and making it a full-fledged rule ahead of schedule); B) the league WILL alter the rule, because hell, they created the rule specifically for the Galaxy to do this kind of thing in the first place; C) Landycakes started his MLS career in San Jose and seemed to want to return there when he left Bayern Leverkusen, but LA worked their way to the top of the allocation pool; D) it would make the expansion team immediately relevant to fans… it all fits so well.
Almost too well…

Can you imagine how TFC fans are feeling about this? The very idea of a Zidane or Figo, in a TFC uniform is spellbinding, considering the team has a guy, named Lombardo, who earns $30k per season, and takes the bus to the stadium, as the principal striker, on a team that has not scored a goal since early July. Lombardo has yet to score an MLS goal. He is probably the worst striker in the history of the sport. Zidane would have to have both legs amputated above the knee to be as bad as this guy, so you would be really fortunate if this story were true.

Oh you are sooo right. In Zizhou’s case, Lalas might have to adopt a new fashion style… a helmet. LOL! Seriously though, this makes me wonder very much. I can’t see David tolerating much more of this after next season’s run (presuming no injury issues) and I certainly can’t see Figo or Zindane putting up with it. Hell either one of those two would be more qualified for Alexi’s chair…

And if it was true, as bizarre as that reality might be, I will have to get a day job so I can buy season tix… oh wait, with all those big shots, the HDC gen admission spots would have to go up to $80 a pop, right? I’d see my two favs on teevee… oh wait, not it it’s ESPN… they only show poker and nasskart.
