Charles Alamo Says the Galaxy is “Surreal”
By: Laurie | February 16th, 2008
If you haven’t stopped by the official, snark-free Galaxy blog lately, you absolutely need to go in and read this interview with goalkeeper-on-trial Charles Alamo.
(And this is me, working quite hard not to insert anything containing the words, “Remember the…” in this post. But you remem haven’t forgotten Charles, have you?)
The whole interview is great and very personal. He’d just started working for an environmental lobbying firm when he found out the Galaxy might be interested in him in the supplemental draft. And then after the draft, he got a call from Alexi Lalas himself asking him to come to LA.
Just one quote, about playing with the “names.”
I think surreal is the word you go with. I’ve watched these players my whole life and looked up to them as soccer players, athletes, individuals forever. You’re in the locker room or on the pitch, 95 percent they are like any other teammate. You respect them, they are veterans. They’ve been around the game for a long time and obviously, played at the highest level, but when you’re in the locker room, on the pitch or up at lunch, you play for the same thing—you’re teammates. That’s the bottom line. I think they understand that for the most time. David’s been incredibly nice, surprisingly so. He’s down to earth and really cares about his teammates. Then I go home and my friends call that I played high school soccer with and they are like you’re kidding me, you saved a shot from David Beckham today. When I think of it like that, in that context, it is kind of ridiculous.
Damn. With this interview I’m now officially maternally activated. Now he’d better make the team!
(And yes, this is the same photo I used last time. There’s not a lot of choice out there just yet. But when he makes the roster, that will all change. Right?)

I work in the Biz (Hollyweird) and this is a common thing when you’re starting out.
Laurie, I can empathize as I felt paternally activated by Chucky’s words. As a kid, I like him already. Now, can he be as quick as El Gato and be as psychic as that dude-who-shall-not-be-named-who-defected-to-SanHo? If he rocks the gee-ay, I want him twixt the sticks.
