Aftermath: Galaxy Vs. Wizards

By: NathanHJ | September 14th, 2008

Put a fork in them. They are done.

With seven games remaining in the regular season, the Galaxy went to Kansas City to visit the other worst team in the league. This time they were a full strength, facing a squad that has the most anemic attack. Boasting a somewhat improved defense and a new focus on basics since the arrival of King Bruce, this game really should have been a competitive victory for the Galaxy.

It was not to be. Shanked twice in quick succession midway through the second half, the Galaxy never mounted a serious offensive threat, looking out of sync and out of gas. Despite the presence of four starters who missed last game due to international call-ups, the team never got into a rhythm. Flashes of brilliance were too often foiled by bad decision-making in the box or poor execution. And when Kansas City got a scrappy goal in the 67th minute from Josh Wolff and then a potential Goal of the Week strike from Davy Arnaud in the 69th, the Galaxy had no answer. The fact that Alan Gordon was the sum total of reenforcements off the bench speaks for itself.

This was one of the most frustrating games I’ve watch all season. In other games I’ve blamed it on the lack of having a full-strength squad. This time that excuse didn’t exist, though I think it is clear that playing in World Cup qualifiers and traveling around the world took its tool on the four LA starters involved. As I noted above, there was no rhythm, little connection in the midfield and a lot of playing long balls that went wanting because of the short field.

It brought to mind last year’s game against Columbus at home where the Galaxy played most of the game a man up but still managed to lose 3-2. Both teams missed the playoffs in 2007. One year later Columbus, on the third year of a rebuilding program is the best team in the league. And the Galaxy are the worst.

Based on last year’s finishing, I think the Galaxy need at least 42 points (and probably more) to guarantee a spot in the playoffs. They have 26. That means they need 16 points from the remaining 18 points on offer (6 games). They need 6 wins or 5 wins and 1 tie. They play 3 of those games away. To Chicago, Columbus, and Houston. At home they host DC United, Colorado, and Dallas. I don’t see how they can pick up points in any of their away games, much less the full three in each. Add-in October World Cup call-ups and I don’t see the team winning more than two of their final 6 games.

The time is now to start grooming those players who are going to be the future of the team for 2008 to play in games that matter. Of course this grooming depends on being injury-free and players like Brandon McDonald and Ely Allen and Alvaro Piers all have injuries. And, frankly, beyond Brandon McDonald and possibly Julian Valentin, I don’t know who looks like they could step up. I still have hopes for Josh Tudela, but while I like his work rate, I’m not impressed with his basic skills. The same with Mike Randolph, though I do see him learning something new every game he plays. Bryan Jordan’s play has improved dramatically with his loan to the Portland Timbers and he could turn into a dependable MLS attacker next year. He should get looks for the rest of the season.

What did you guys thinks of the game? Are the Galaxy going to make the playoffs? Who should King Bruce be playing over the next 6 games? Share your thought in the comments.

I don’t support Galaxy, as the pub crawlers would say, but I don’t think you can grant Beckham the international duty excuse; look how much he played vs. Croatia, compared to Theo Walcott, and look how well he played yesterday when Arsenal took apart Blackburn (away, no less). Then again, Beckham’s twice Walcott’s age…

I think the Becks gets a “travel” excuse for traveling over 12,000 miles, including at least two 10 hour transatlantic flights, plus travel within Europe and then a 3 hour flight to KC. If it was just playing I would agree. And with Walcott, he didn’t travel nearly as much and, as you say, he’s almost 15 years younger than Becks.

I’m at a loss. Yesterday I was center ref for five youth matches and I’m just plain beat. I watched a little of the match on DVR then woke up at the end. I have to re-watch it because I really don’t remember much. I was supposed to play in the old man sunday game I usually go to but I’m too tired.

That we lost and so horribly again, just makes me feel tangled up inside. My heart goes out to those guys… at the same time, it’s funny every time I do a U16 or U14 match I realize, this generation in the youth leagues, if the MLS gets their business shit back in order and pays players not just the über internationals “retiring” from Europe and S.A. to MLS, it’s this generation of players whose ball handling makes the current “pros” look like something fresh outta the 1960s, who will deliver world class futbol to the MLS. The stuff I witnessed yesterday in U16 and 14’s was simply exhilarating futbol. From the few minutes I think I saw of the LA/KC match, I’m just not sure I was in the twilight zone yesterday. Plus the fact that a clearly outmatched side yesterday pulled themselves together mentally to come from behind in the final fifteen minutes… from 4-0 to tie then slam a game winner in the final minute of stoppage… all because they believed they could win… then to see our guys just sort of stall on the pitch like that. Makes me wonder: if child can get his shit together and persist, overcome and thrive, why can’t a bunch of grown ups? Makes me think that maybe there’s just too much grown-up add-on baggage for these guys to overcome. Or sumpin….

Thinks… Sam may not know as much as he thinks, still sometimes it’s hard to be objective from the grassy knoll.

Maybe Becks should sacrifice himself and retire from international football.

Wow, and I was actually excited about this season at its start…

Now I’ve had a 3 month drought in terms of excitement…

I hate MLS. I’m beginning to hate LA.

All I can do now is continue what I usually do, and that’s watch Chelsea hopefully conquer the EPL. I won’t even be watching a single MLS game for the remainder of the season. It is pathetic.

I don’t get it. Some bad decisions, some bad losses, and suddenly the whole league sucks? The Galaxy made bad choices. They have now fired the GM, brought in a more suitable coach, and are already starting to see results. It doesn’t change overnight. They still suck and probably won’t make the playoffs. But it is still our team and they are turning things around. Either you’re a bandwagoner or this is the time to fan up.

As much as the players are to blame for playing like crap, some poor descions on the part of the admin. Signing Dominguez is a joke. I think he gets a pretty penny too and it’s hurt our defense. The scouting should have been better and got somebody who would have worked. And sending carlos ruiz for almost nothing is pathetic, they gave in to easily! They should have tried to get a decent player in return for the defense or center mid from toronto! Like Julius James (who could be killer with Franklin)

Get rid of beckham, let him play international, photo shoots, commercials, etc on someone elses dime and time!
Use the money and get back Albright, Marshall, and another midfielder! And yes, now is the time to FAN UP or shut up……….

ralphy, the problem is that AIG make millions of dimes every time Beckham does one of the those things — England, GQ, sharpie, whatever. And the side-trip to the Olympics, in China? An AIG wet-dream.

Unfortunately, while he’s been asked and done no more for clubs and sponsors for almost ten years now, its never impacted his game for this long before. Obviously there are more miles and time zones and a league that doesn’t follow the fifa calendar, but knowing that isn’t much comfort to fans, and probably not to teammates, coaches or the player himself.

Nothing new in the business of sports, but always sad anyway.

AEG or AIG? If it’s AIG, then they might put Beckham on a worldwide tour again so that they can pull themselves out of the financial hole they’re in.

And an AEG wet dream somehow also involves Alexi Lalas as GM and an MLS team falling to the bottom of the league table.

Hilarious! I was just reading an article about AIG’s sponsorship of Manchester United and I got the lot of the mixed up.

The wet dreams of most team owners involve things that would horrify all fans and players everywhere, beyond actually thinking of them having one, not least the thrill of chewing up players and spitting them out.

Should Laurie get out the old punch drunk boxer movies we chatted about last season? AEG doesn’t seem overly concerned with any of their players’ health in the face of making a dollar — or “cracking the Asian market”… and crack it to offer what as we asked during the exhausting pre-season.

    Sigh.
