And Now Some (Non-)News on the Galaxy’s Shirt Sponsor

By: Laurie | March 21st, 2007

I don’t have any more news on who our shirt sponsor will be, but sadly, I do have info on who it won’t be. Alas, Citibank, aka the potential sponsor who had actual credibility, is apparently no longer in the running. Steven Goff of Soccer Insider at WashingtonPost.com tells us that Citibank is no longer considering the Galaxy deal.

Although hold on a second. Isn’t this the same guy who had me ecstatically convinced that Zizou was coming to the US? Yeah, that Steven Goff. I still haven’t forgiven him for that. But anyhow. Steven reports that:

Citibank’s efforts to acquire the sponsorship rights for the Los Angeles Galaxy’s jersey for an estimated $49 million over five years have come to an end without a deal, sources told me today. Maybe one of the issues was that banking rival Chase is a league sponsor? Hmmm.
Whatever the reasons, there will not be a “Citibank” label across the front of Beckham’s uniform this summer.

Okay. No Citibank. Who does that leave us with? Let’s see. At the time of the last report, also in the running was Herbalife.

Herbalife. Great. So what will our new logo be? “Herbalife: We were never a pyramid scheme! Not ever! No, REALLY!!!”

What I think is, if we’re going to toss away our credibility on cheesy weight-loss-type products, why don’t we go for the gusto and do TrimSpa? In memory of Anna Nicole. We could have our guys’ jerseys’ chests surgically enhanced, and our logo would read, “TrimSpa: She died tragically, but she died THIN!!”

Hey, I think that would totally be worth $50 million.
