Galaxy 2 – 2 Wizards
By: Laurie | July 7th, 2007Somebody please tell me: What the HELL was that?
I was otherwise occupied during the game, but I had it running on the computer in another room the whole time. (Muted, of course. Everybody in my real life already thinks I suffer from soccer-related antisocial personality disorder. To which I just respond that this could be fixed by their learning to love soccer.)
But anyhoo. I was catching the first half a minute or three at a time, and the Galaxy was looking good. Absolutely beautiful passing, solid defense… By halftime I had mentally written my post-game post — something about how I was TOTALLY comfortable with this back line, but the offense could use a boost.
And then halftime came, and I couldn’t tune in again till the 53rd minute. Checked the screen and… What the HELL?!?! 2-0 KC? How could it possibly be Two to ZERO!!? I actually even refreshed my screen in the hope that I was seeing things. No such luck.
And then Cobi came in and saved the day, of course, scoring two goals to salvage the point.
But I’m left with the thought: This should have been a 2-0 win. Or maybe even more, given all the missed chances. What the hell happened during the first eight minutes of the second half that made it a freaking draw?
I’m looking forward to watching this again tomorrow to see how this played out. (Or maybe I’m not looking forward to it. But I’m kind of wanting to see it. The way you want to see a video of a car wreck to see who was at fault.)

The mistakes that led to KC’s goals were the fault of a player we didn’t need (Chris Klein) and a goalkeeper we didn’t need (Cannon).

Watching a MLS game twice should be followed by automatic candidacy for sainthood.

Gotta say, the goalkeeping has been a liability. I have seen Cronin (the backup) play once this season, and he was great. The second goal was a total Cannon Catastrophe. The guy is slow off his line and his decision making on set pieces is usually bad. By the way, Yallop’s determination to play Donovan out wide was a poor one. He needs to see a lot of the ball and they don’t get it wide to him nearly enough.

I’m a bit worried about how they’re going to place everybody on the field after Beckham arrives. Yallop earlier was saying 4-3-3, with Beckham in center midfield. And I’m guessing Buddle, Pavon and Donovan starting up front? If Beckham were to adjust well, this could be great. But everything I’ve seen says that Beckham’s a whole lot better and more comfortable at right mid. So what if he’s not up to the challenge of playing in the middle? Then who goes where? And where does Martino fit in, if at all?
I’m thinking we’re not done with our growing pains this season.
