Galaxy 4-0 Fresno Fuego
By: Laurie | March 12th, 2007
The first article I read on the Galaxy-Fresno game was from the FresnoBee. Boy, was that a depressed piece of reporting. Galaxy 4, Fresno Fuego 0.
Let’s move to a slightly more cheerful version of events. The Galaxy website (Yeah! I know!) tells us all about it.
Scoring Summary:
LA - Cobi Jones (Kevin Harmes) 19
LA - Josh Gardner (Unassisted) 32
LA - John Thorrington (Josh Gardner) 37
LA - Cobi Jones (Unassisted) 52
LOVE Cobi Jones. He is a shining star to old folks everywhere. Plus he has great hair. My favorite paragraph from the website article:
In the 52nd minute, Jones added his second goal of the night to put the match away. Demonstrating the speed and dribbling skills fans have come to know, Jones went past two defenders before blasting a shot from top of the 18-yard box past the Fresno goalkeeper and into the upper right corner for the final tally in a 4-0 victory.
How cool is that? Seriously.
From the lineup, it looks like Frank and Alexi are making the final tweaks to get ready for the season. (And still no sign of Kyle Veris. Are we sadly pulling out the tissues and writing the eulogy yet?) Trialists Ritchie Kotschau, John Thorrington and Canadian Kevin Harmse were on display again, with Thorrington getting another goal and Harmse getting an assist. No mention of British trialist Darren Currie. It is never a good sign when a trialist goes missing. What’s up with that?
Speaking of Darren Currie, if you were wondering (as I was) why he got the trial among all the gazillion players of the world, well, I have the answer. Seems that he and Frank Yallop share the common bond of Ipswich: “Obviously, I know Darren. He was at Ipswich when I’d go back and watch them play,” Yallop said. “I used to like the way he played.” Okay, I get it now.
I’m still crossing my fingers for Darren in LA. What do you think?

Ben has a point, even though I think that Laurie does a great job balancing the serious with the slanderous, and her sense of humor is a high point of the site. I don’t think you can leave the players’ lives out of the equation, either with a light-hearted or sober look. In this instance, MLS is taking a huge leap in marketing that fairly raises concerns for the league and every team in it. The issue of “Brand Beckham,” whether or not we discuss the player’s own relationship to it, is significant in how the league and sponsors plan to exploit it (as well as the new visibility is brings) and the impact that will have on schedules, player responsibilities, etc.
A question I came to ask today is a perfect example. This article http://ussoccerplayers.com/latest_soccer_news/533584.html talks about tiring out Galaxy players with games and tournaments aimed at marketing, possibly at the cost of League play and, as a newcomer, I was wondering what you think. Is is true? If so, has there been consideration of a split season in the past? Is it a good idea? Thanks for any info.
AND, thank GAWD I have finally tuned in so that I can become a Cobi Jones fan just in the nick of time!! Very cool.Posted from
