Galaxy-Vancouver Friendly Apparently “Rescheduled.” But Minnesota’s Still On?

By: Laurie | October 2nd, 2007

Remember way back in the spring, in that heady “Beckham will turn us into SUPERHEROES!” period, when all those friendlies sounded like a great idea?

Yeah, me neither. But they must have sounded like a great idea to somebody at the time.

No more.

At least one has apparently been rescheduled. Or something. (Did you see an official announcement?) The game with the Vancouver Whitecaps, originally scheduled for tomorrow, is still selling tickets on Ticketmaster, but the date now reads “TBA.”

The Minnesota Thunder game, scheduled for next Wednesday, October 10, though? Tickets still available on Ticketmaster this morning, even though it’s not showing up on the Galaxy schedule.

Any Minnesotans out there? What’s the deal? Is anybody really imagining that our walking wounded team is going to further diminish its slim-to-none playoff hopes by putting the players at risk in a friendly? We don’t even have enough healthy players to field a freakin’ Reserve team for this one.

Heck, the Galaxy ARE a Reserve team right now.

I’d personally expect to see the Galaxy in Vancouver and Minnesota when hell freezes over.

(And how will you know that’s happened? The Galaxy will be in the playoffs.)

UPDATE: See comments for the press release rescheduling the Minnesota game. (Thanks to “Seamonster.”) But this doesn’t change the fact that Ticketmaster was still selling tickets for the October 10 game this morning. What’s up with that?

The Galaxy exhibition in MN is a total ripoff. I paid $75 for an upper deck ticket in July. I am a die hard fan and I trusted the powers that be. Now the game even happening hangs on whether the Galaxy make the playoffs and ticket prices have been slashed to $15 (this last bit is rumor printed in the Minneapolis paper. The Thunder didn't even have the guts to release it as an official announcement). I am starting a PASL (premier indoor soccer league) team in fall 2008 to gauge indoor interest in MN. Then it's MISL. MN has done it before. Consider me the anti-Thunder!!!!

I know the Vancouver game had a clause that said Beckham had to play 45 minutes of the match or they could reschedule. I think I read that in the days after his injury.

I find it interesting that Lalas likes to blame MLS for backloading their schedule, while he scheduled not 1, but 2! exhibition games at the end of our season with our backloaded calendar and in the heart of the playoff race. There's no one to blame but Lalas for that.

I think Ticketmaster is still selling tickets because the powers-that-be thought the Galaxy would be eliminated from playoff contention by now. That way they could reschedule the game quickly without having to refund anybody's money.

Notice they haven't announced an opponent for this game? From what we've been told, the Galaxy will NOT be playing the Thunder.
  • Thanks, Seamonster. I was pretty sure I'd missed something along these lines when I was out of the country. But why is Ticketmaster still selling tickets?

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COPA MINNESOTA SOCCER MATCH FEATURING THE L.A. GALAXY AND DAVID BECKHAM POSTPONED DUE TO BECKHAM'S INJURY

Thunder and Galaxy Officials Finalizing Alternative Date

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Friday, September 14, 2007) – The Minnesota Thunder announced today that Copa Minnesota, a soccer match featuring the Los Angeles Galaxy and soccer superstar David Beckham, will be postponed. The original date of October 10, 2007 in the Metrodome is not an option for Beckham to appear since his knee sprain injury on August 29 is expected to sideline the star for up to six weeks. The Thunder and the Galaxy are committed to rescheduling the match as soon as possible.

“We are all very aware of what the draw is for this match,” said Manny Lagos, director of soccer operations for the Thunder. “We will be working very closely with the Galaxy over the next few weeks to reschedule this match as soon as possible and we will announce the Galaxy’s opponent at that time. We have had a backup plan just in case something like this happened and it’s now going into effect. We are extremely optimistic that we will get this game in by the end of 2007.”

In January, the Galaxy altered the soccer landscape in North America when they announced that world-renowned icon David Beckham would be joining the club after his contact with Real Madrid expires on June 30, 2007. Beckham, 32, is celebrated throughout the world for his unparalleled abilities on the pitch – evidenced during his tenure with Real Madrid, Manchester United, and the English national team – and for his overall contributions to the sport. Since his arrival in the states, the Galaxy have been playing in front of sold out crowds across the United States and Canada.

On May 22, the Twin Cities became the first non-MLS city in the United States to secure a match with the Galaxy and Beckham, making headlines across the country.

All fans who have purchased tickets for the original date of October 10 will keep their same seats for the rescheduled date. Any fans that purchase tickets between now and the reschedule announcement will keep their same seats as well.
