Galaxy vs. Chivas Preview
By: jen | April 10th, 2009
I don’t think the match between the Galaxy and Chivas USA is going to be that clear cut. The odds are in Chivas’ favor given their record (3-0) versus ours (0-1-1). But records aren’t always a clear indicator when these two teams meet.
Before the season began several MLS analysts expected Chivas to perform poorly this season. (Yes, I read it several places but did I save the links? Noooo. You’ll have to believe me.) Perhaps this game will be the start of those predictions.
After an unattractive loss to the Rapids last weekend, the Galaxy regrouped and looked more cohesive and dangerous against the Rapids on Tuesday (Open Cup), eventually losing in PKs. The addition of Gregg Berhalter in the back four seemed key in the defense’s improvement.
Donovan Ricketts and Edson Buddle are both expected to be out, but all other of the Galaxy’s key players should be available.
I think where the game will be won or lost is in the midfield. Chivas’ Paulo Nagamura, and Jesse Marsch are formidable holding midfielders while Nagamura, in particular, feeds the offense well. When you add USMNT player Sacha Kljestan to the midfield lineup Chivas seems as though they can’t lose. With Kovalenko serving a red card suspension the young ‘uns on our team will need to work hard to be effective in the midfield.
The good news is that Chivas’ defense is more porous than their 3-0 record would indicate. Look for Landon to get into space to both create and finish opportunities on goal. If the other forward (Kirovski?, Gordon?) can move effectively, Landon should be able to find more space than he’s seen so far this season.
My prediction? Galaxy 2 — Chivas 1.
UPDATE FROM Nathanhj: Please feel free to use Jen’s preview as you place to leave your running commentary during the game, for people with good phone tech at the game and for folks following along on ESPN2. I’ll be doing periodic updates from the game, myself.
Hopefully we’ll see a Chivas defense like this:

That video of the fainting goats never gets old!
Sadly, they most closely resemble the Galaxy defense instead of Chivas’.
But tonight the tide will turn. Galaxy will somehow come out as the winner. I can just feel it.
I’m hoping Donovan Ricketts can play. I seem to recall reading last week on some twitter thingy that he told the reporter that he fully expected to play on Saturday.
Good write-up, Jen. I agree about winning and losing in midfield. And on paper, it’s no contest. But I hope our guys have the game of their lives.

Ricketts and Dunivant are both listed as questionable still. At least Lewis shows as probable. http://web.mlsnet.com/stats/injuries.jsp. I think Arena is, quite rightly, still trying to mix the lineup and see what works. I’d love to see what we’re capable of with Donovan, Lewis, Klein, and Berhalter out there all at the same time. It’s like Arena is slowly reassembling the old national team. If he could just coax Reyna out of retirement….

Totally unrelated, Jones has an article today about the Galaxy’s dismal attendance figures. http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-soccer-galaxy-chivas11-2009apr11,0,4776178.story.
I think it is fair to say that Beckham caused the problem, but not in the way people usually mean. In my experience, Beckham was a success in bringing new people to the games. He piqued the curiosity of non-soccer fans. Most didn’t really even know if he was playing, but once they came to the game they had a good time. The potential was there.
But by bringing in Beckham, the Galaxy stunted their ability to build a team. They had two great players and a strange mix of others. The offense was good, but the team couldn’t win. That drove away and soured long time fans and posioned the club’s reputation. Those new fans usually come because they know one of us, the hard core. If we lose interest, why would they come? I think attendance is down because we are disappointed and unenthusiastic.
So, if I were the Galaxy, how would I fix it? Really simple: win. It’s not about exciting names. It is about energy. It is about winning games. It is about building a team we can all get excited about. I think Arena is doing it, but it’s going to take time.

Beckham brought attendance waay up from previous seasons…in all the stadiums. He’s a world famous cover model. That was one of his main jobs. Then he left, so there ya go. But on top of that, add the Galaxies dismal performance over the past 3 seasons and the equally dismal economy…Honestly, I bought tickets to the AC Milan game and Inter vs Chelsea, so I’ll have to watch some TV to balance out those purchases. lol.
Chivas should stomp on us, but it could be close. I’ve watched there games and they do look strong. The doubters were saying they have so many injuries that they’d be out, but sometimes it’s a blessing. If only we were so blessed!
Without a goalie or good service to Donovan (anyone notice how he’s doing all the service lately?) and w/out Buddle, it’s going to be tough. I’ll be watching Berhalter in this one for sure.

This should be a interesting match for sure along with some tough challenges (hope the ref is fair on his calls tonight). It’s too bad we still don’t have Donovan Ricketts playing, this is going to cost us for sure not having a solid keeper. Hopefully Berhalter will be starting and he should bring some calmness/stability to the back line.
Donovan needs to be up top making the goals, not continually trying to setup the others, we need Buddle back to take some of the pressure off Donovan and open up some space. If we could have everyone healthy and on the pitch at once, that would be great to see.
Wonder what the starting lineup will be.

Chivas has better midfield possession so far but game is still pretty ragged. Also pretty physical for the first 10 minutes.

We are totally bunkering and chasung the ball. Feel much better about ricketts than saunders, though.
We can’t win if we get string passes through the midfield.

ref getting card happy. Maybe he should call more fouls on rough challenges first. Just sayin’.

not the ref’s finest game ever.

LA is playing embarrassingly bad again. Gordon just has no skill on finishing. Stefan Migliaoriziiaoii is horrible. Non-existent. Franklin has no clue how to play mid. Has he even crossed it yet?? He’s in perfect positions w/ open men and he does what? Clear it backwards. He looks afraid to cross the ball in. How many times have they passed back to Ricketts?? Guess they want to make sure he gets some practice. lol. At least it turns out he is actually good. Chris Klein is a hard worker and great leader. Mad respect. But he just does not have good skill on the ball. He needs to commit to his runs. Ugh. Has anyone on LA actually won a ball from Chivas yet? Fire everyone and keep Lewis, Donovan and Ricketts. Man o man

crazy game. red cards from double yellows on both sides. no idea what led to gordon’s second.
chivas superiority in midfield showing strongly now.

Why why why is Gordon on this team? If your going to be an a**hole at least produce something.

berhalter’s fisrt mustake leads to a red card ejection. passed the ball right to eskandarian and then pulled him down as last defender.
Sanneh now in game.

Disgusting soccer match to watch. Just horrible in all respects. One bright light…DONOVAN RICKETTS!!!!!!!! Thank you lord.

BTW: as bad as the refing was here, the Seattle/KC game had even more fouls! :-O

wow, where to begin:
Ricketts had a solid game with some great saves and I believe the only reason the Galaxy walked away with 1 point is because of this man, Man of the Match!Gordon, what can you say that hasn’t been said before, he must have something really dirty on the Galaxy Management to remain on the team
and then to get red carded out of the game, don’t even know what to say about that. Berhalter, played a pretty game for the most part until that crappy pass and then he had to bring down eskandarian, shaking my head.
Shavar Thomas (Chivas defender), how did this player not get a yellow card by choking Donovan and basically playing the player and not the ball most of the time.
Lots of cheap fouls and yellow/red cards, it was interesting for sure!

Anybody remember that Goldie Hawn movie “Wildcats?” Remember the cheerleaders? “U – G – L – Y, you ain’t got no alibi, you ugly, yeah, yeah, you ugly.” ’bout sums it up.

I missed the Gordon red, but the guy sitting behind me saw the whole thing. Talley was f***ing with Gordon, and Gordon turned and pushed Talley. Stupid move on Gordon’s part, but that’s what the goats had to do to get even. Who knows what game the ref was watching, or his logic on handing out cards. It bugs me when refs dictate the pace of a match. There have been crappy refs for the last 2 weeks now.

Nathan- Rickets was warming up with the team before the game. He was doing the same warm-ups the other keepers have been doing. So far so good.

i agree with each comment about Gordon
I AM SICK AND TIRED OF HIM, he can’t finish a goal by himself. The goals he has scored are of the work of everybody else. I was watching him take practice shots during the pre-game warm up, and he was horrible! Wasn’t even making the pre-game shots! He misses a clear chance in the first half
THEN takes to stupid yellowcards that i think cost us the three points. We could have gotten a goal until his stupid descions.
I can’t wait till buddle is healthy, cause Gordon needs to go!
