Galaxy’s Hosting World Series 2007!!!

By: Laurie | March 9th, 2007

Hey, that’s what my e-mail says: Galaxy to Host 2007 World Series. Because that name’s not, y’know, taken or anything.

Okay, it actually says “World Series of Football.” Which sounds unbelievably exciting.

And you’re thinking, So tell us, Laurie, what is the World Series of Football? Well, I’m glad you asked. Because I have the answer:

The World Series of Football is a four-team tournament that will bring together two-time reigning English Premier League champion Chelsea FC, two-time MLS Cup champion Los Angeles Galaxy, three-time K-League champion Suwon Bluewings and two-time Mexican First Division champion Tigres UANL. All four teams will play two games in this tournament with the eventual winner being crowned the World Series of Football champion.

That may seem slightly less than a “World Series” until you consider: isn’t four countries two more than the baseball World Series? So we’re MORE actual World Series than the World Series. (And we’re going to completely ignore the fact that by the time of the game, Chelsea in all probability won’t be the reigning EPL Champion. Because that would deflate the excitement bubble in a completely unnecessary manner.)

Oh, and plus? They call it the FOOTBALL World Series and not the SOCCER World Series, so we can make it seem like we’re standing shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the world here.

It is with some amusement that I’m imagining some NFL types having a few beers, going online, getting sucked into the “World Series Football” hype and excitement and ending up stuck in a seat watching Suwon Bluewings vs. Tigres UANL.

But I, myself, would totally enjoy it.

Tuesday, July 17: Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Tigres UANL; Chelsea FC vs. Suwon Bluewings at The Home Depot Center

Saturday, July 21: Suwon Bluewings vs. Tigres UANL; Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Chelsea FC at The Home Depot Center

On the subject of squad abuse, what is up with the new Galaxy dressing room decor with pictures of one player all over the walls and chairs? It's kind of alarming if a precursor of Things To Come. Granted Adidas may have provided the furnishings gratis, but might this not crush morale further amongst the poorly paid enslaved and abused? I am not having a warm cozy feeling about personnel management out there...:(
  • Sounds great, but here's a question: does LA hate their players? I'm taking it as a given they'll flame out of the Open Cup, but they've still got one league and one Liga with which to cope. Adding a tournament, and a meaningless one to boot, it's slavery I tell you.
  • Oh, Andy, you're just bitter about my "they won't be reigning EPL Champions" line, aren't you? ;-)

Hey, sounds swell. I daresay the Dubai Cup (Marseille, Bayern, Benfica and Lazio) was of a higher caliber, but you know how silly my opinions are! Bwahahaha.
  • Firstly as its Football its correct and secondly is THIS the major announcement, because if it is we knew this yesterday!!! LOL LOL
