Galaxy’s Hosting World Series 2007!!!
By: Laurie | March 9th, 2007Hey, that’s what my e-mail says: Galaxy to Host 2007 World Series. Because that name’s not, y’know, taken or anything.
Okay, it actually says “World Series of Football.” Which sounds unbelievably exciting.
And you’re thinking, So tell us, Laurie, what is the World Series of Football? Well, I’m glad you asked. Because I have the answer:
The World Series of Football is a four-team tournament that will bring together two-time reigning English Premier League champion Chelsea FC, two-time MLS Cup champion Los Angeles Galaxy, three-time K-League champion Suwon Bluewings and two-time Mexican First Division champion Tigres UANL. All four teams will play two games in this tournament with the eventual winner being crowned the World Series of Football champion.
That may seem slightly less than a “World Series” until you consider: isn’t four countries two more than the baseball World Series? So we’re MORE actual World Series than the World Series. (And we’re going to completely ignore the fact that by the time of the game, Chelsea in all probability won’t be the reigning EPL Champion. Because that would deflate the excitement bubble in a completely unnecessary manner.)
Oh, and plus? They call it the FOOTBALL World Series and not the SOCCER World Series, so we can make it seem like we’re standing shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the world here.
It is with some amusement that I’m imagining some NFL types having a few beers, going online, getting sucked into the “World Series Football” hype and excitement and ending up stuck in a seat watching Suwon Bluewings vs. Tigres UANL.
But I, myself, would totally enjoy it.
