Gameday: Galaxy Vs. DC United

By: NathanHJ | September 20th, 2008

This is the place to comment on tonight’s game, but first, a game preview! Come back when the game is in full swing and leave your comments here.

The Galaxy enter today’s home game (8:00 pm PDT – FSC) in the grip of a club-record 12 game winless streak, taking just six points from the 36 on offer. They sit at the bottom of the Western Conference on 26 points, four points out of the last Western playoff spot. It’s been over 100 days since the team’s last win and it is the first time since mid-July that both Landon Donovan and David Beckham will be playing together in front of the Home Depot Center crowd.

The Galaxy faces a DC United squad racked by injuries and in the midst of a punishing schedule of MLS and CONCACAF Champions League games. United played Tuesday at home, plays today in LA, plays next week in Honduras, then next Sunday at Pizza Hut Park. For this game they are without their DP Marcus Gallardo, as well as Jaime Moreno and Joe Vide. The Galaxy, on the other hand, face United with most of their top players at full strength, though starting keeper Steve Cronin is still out with a hand injury. This means that Donovan, Becks, Eddie Lewis, Ante Jazic, Chris Klein, and Sean Franklin will face Emilio, Fred, Ivan Guerrero, Bryan Namoff, Clyde Simms, and possibly new keeper Louis Crayton.

United is occupying the fifth playoff spot from the East (one of the two that go the best of the rest after the top three in each conference are selected) on 33 points, four points ahead of Kansas City. Both teams need to win in order to firm up post season plans (and the Galaxy needs to win in order to keep any post-season hope alive).

In June, United spanked LA at RFK 4-1 in one of the most comprehensive defeats LA has suffered all season. They were outplayed from beginning to end. But today’s United team is different. Injuries, packed scheduling, and lots of travel have distrupted the rhythm the team was building earlier this season. The Galaxy, with the addition of Eddie Lewis and a new coaching staff, is looking to build on what it has been doing right, including having two of the top three goalscorers in the league in Donovan (16 goals – leading the league) and Edson Buddle (13 goals – third in the league). A few weeks ago I was dreading this match-up. Today, I think the Galaxy have a good shot at pulling out three points.

My guess at the line-up for the Galaxy in a 4-4-2 is this:

Buddle – Jordan
Lewis – Donovan – Vanney – Beckham
Jazic – Franklin – Roberts – Klein
Wicks

In my scheme, Donovan plays just behind the two strikers, allowing him to create based on their runs, or to run off of them. Lewis and Becks act as wingers and Vanney acts as stopper, with Franklin playing the sweeping role behind him. This could also be modified into a 4-3-3, with Donovan as center forward and Vanney as center mid.

These were the players that started in KC last week, but this time I expect that Donovan, Becks, and Lewis will all be rested and playing at 100%, unlike last weeks game. United, on the other hand, is in the middle of a miserable schedule and I expect them to lack bounce and tire easily, though they still possess a raft of quality players. However, without Moreno or Gallardo, Fred will be hard-pressed to create for Emilio, meaning Rod Dyachenko and Guerrero will have to step up. This matchup favors the Galaxy at this point. If they come out focused and sharp they could overwhelm United and walk away with a victory.

I’m betting on that. Galaxy 2-1.

What do you guys think? Who do you want to see start? What is your prediction for the game?

this may be off tropic but still relevant ’cause he was our coach for most of the season and an interesting read. Rudd talks about the MLS.

You know what’s sad? Even when the boys are up 3-1 at the half, all I can think is, “Don’t blow it. Don’t blow it.”

Come on boys! hold on for 45 more minutes!!

Steve, I would agree. I thought Jazic had a fantastic game. Eddie Lewis looked pretty good also. Klein didn’t have his best game, but everybody else made up for it. And it was good to see Vagenas finally get a goal!

Klein may have not had his best game, but he still got two very nice assists for Donovan’s 1st and 3rd goals.

Who was that team? Finally the entire team looked like they came to play. Excellent result. I was worried after giving up a goal one minute in and Beckham doing his ankle in the 12th. It’s definitely something to build on. I sure hope that Arena brings in a quality GK.

I missed the game but watched some highlights, great goals from Donovan! Hat trick great to see again, 19 goals on the season and some more to come hopefully. From reading the comments it sounds like the team played well together and showed some of the potential that is there. Lets hope for that end of the season great run of play and make the post season interesting. Still not over!

Finally! Yes, LA Galaxy finally gets a deserved win. Laurie, I sat in my seat at HDC thinking & feeling the same as you. We are up 3 – 1, and all I can keep repeating to myself is, “Please guys, don’t do anything stupid. Please continue to defend and mark. Don’t blow this lead!”. But, with a rested, readied, practiced David and Landon – we were able to get a victorius socreline of 5 – 2 against DCU. Now, I don’t know how the game would have panned out if Marcello Gallardo & Jaime Moreno were playing in it. But, Santino, Luciano, the new USL-2 boy wonder “Thabiso Boyzzz Khumalo”, Fred, and Louis Crayton did a phenomenal job in creating their own luck. I knew it… I knew there was no way that Chris Klein could thwart Thabiso. This kid is pure lightning. Don’t get me wrong; I very much support Chris Klein and the tireless work-horse running and feeding he does. However, he has got beaten noticeably in several matches, so far. Then again, so have Greg… so have Troy… so have Eduardo… and, so on. Our defensive prowess and readiness is something that Bruce, Dave, and Cobi have to continually beat in and press upon this team. Especially now and onwards heading into play-offs. As Bruce stated, there are still “bad habits”, “lapses in concentration”, and allowing goals within 10 minutes from whistle. I honestly feel these issues will only become better the more Bruce, Dave, and Cobi presses them immensely hard and holds the players accountable during practice sessions. Yes, our team fought back! Yes, they knew they had to come away with a win. But, these “bad habits” and “lapses in concentraton” will be easily exploited and turned against us when playing against more powerful, faster MLS teams.
We now face Chicago FIRE on Sept. 25th (Thursday) – AWAY at Toyota Park. And, after we face Columbus CREW on Oct. 04th (Saturday) – AWAY at Crew Stadium. Two difficult, testy, loud, combative games w/o home field advantage. I just pray… I just really hope that the same fire, guts, heart, and intensity is what we see during those games.

Charles, they really need to have you come in to give pep talks before games — heck, before and after practice too, and at the coach’s table during lunch.

Thanks, Diane; I think? I don’t know if you’re being sarcastic or not. Anyways, I’ll be naieve and think it was a sincere comment. And, by the way – there’s no reason why you can’t either, Diane. If my memory serves me correctly, you are an astute commentator and anlayst, as well. We’ll have to keep it quiet. If Laurie and Jen find out, they’ll want in on this, as well. You know how those two love any opportunity to steal away a candid / impromptu “Beck’s Pics” here and there. Shhhh! :)

Absolutely unexpected result! I missed the game due to a prior engagement, and when the score got sent to my phone, I could have sworn it was an error… but alas, great game by the Galaxy!

    Keep. It. Up.

Sam, I particularly liked the way Gordo took it for the team by getting a ball slammed up his nose. The entire middle of his face was red afterwards. I’m wondering if he has black eyes this week.

Poor baby! That was a hard shot to take in the face. It almost wiped the image of the shoe-tieing-in-the-box from my mind. Almost. He rallied like a champ though.
