I Need the Danish Translation for “Hello and Goodbye, Tally Hall”
By: Laurie | February 1st, 2007
If there’s one thing we do right over here in the good ol’ US of A, its raise goalkeepers. Our guys may have a hard time cutting it on the European fields (eh, Landon?), but between the posts… Well, our keepers are wanted men.
Which may explain why Galaxy draft pick Tally Hall from San Diego State will not be wearing the green and gold kit that Beckham designs despite being drafted. Tally has apparently signed on to play keeper for “Danish top flight club Esbjerg fB.”
I read a great description of goalkeeper issues in the US, titled, “Young American Keepers Going Abroad…Because There Is No Room At Home… ” in the interesting soccer blog From College to the Pros (This blog has some really great analyses of the economics of soccer in the US.)
In a nutshell: “With keepers being able to play well into their late thirties…how is a young keeper supposed to break through and earn a starting job and bigger paycheck. At a certain point it becomes impossible when ten keepers are being drafted into the league each season and only a couple leave.”
And so our Tally is not ours any more. Because, basically, the Galaxy don’t need no stinkin’ keepers. (Why am I so tempted to insert a failed romance metaphor here?)
So good luck, Tally. Enjoy Denmark. And be thrilled by the fact that now nobody will be asking you what it’s like to play with Beckham.
Irrelevantly, Tally Hall shares his name with a rock band from Ann Arbor, Michigan. So google with care. (If you’re bored, check out the band’s website. It’s kind of cute.)

Good lord…you don’t think they’ll let him near the keeper’s jersey, do you? It’s just too dangerous. There’s no telling what he’ll do with that sort of license.

Well, I can’t really tell seeing as I’m not a professional footballer, but I’d rather play for Los Angeles than “Esbjerg”. But it would be fun to play in Scandinavia, for sure.

I hadn’t even THOUGHT about keeper jerseys. Oh, the creative horrors now popping into my mind.
