KC Beats Dallas, and the Galaxy Dream … Okay, Wait a second… We’ve Still Got a Shot!

By: Laurie | October 20th, 2007

UPDATE: ACK!! Thanks, guys, for the comments and setting me straight! So I can’t add OR count. I knew KC had started at 37, making them out of our reach with 40, but I forgot there were still TWO playoff spots to be decided. So I prematurely gave everybody a heart attack.

And I’m even sober. What’s up with that?!? :-)

So… I said we were out. But NEVER MIND! We’re still in it! Thank you RSL!!!!

The worst part of all is, there is no way to go in and change the synopsis title in Soccerblogs.net that says we’re out, so this will forever be a part of my Permanent Record. Give me a big F.

(But at least I made a mistake that makes me happy to fix.)

  • Jack, me too. Especially since I think Thorrington was one of the trialists we cut early in the season.
  • JustJack
    We're done, yes?

    LA 0 - CHI 1 Final

Last minute goal by John Thorrington (CHI). Frack. I'm depressed now.
  • JustJack
SO if we win against Chicago we're in due to COL losing?

LA vs. CHI 74th minute still tied nil-nil.... Arg!
  • Laurie do you even wonder if the MLS will do everyting in its power to get LA into the playoffs. I can see it now, LA has to run three laps in ten minutes if Columbus draws and RSL Lose, and then they can be in round robin thumb wrestling match to make the playoffs...had they not spent three months sucking they could have easily made it in with their run of play of late.
  • Okay, James, here's how I understand it. Columbus was out before their game today based on whatever tiebreak system is used. (I think I read head to head, but don't quote me.)

That left four teams in contention: LA, Chicago, Colorado and KC.

KC is now definitely in with 40 points. Colorado is definitely out with 35 points. That leaves one playoff spot for either LA (34) or Chicago (37). If Chicago wins, they have 40 points and the Galaxy have 34. Chicago in. If LA and Chicago tie, it's Chicago 38 and LA 35. Chicago in.

If LA wins, Chicago and LA both have 37, and LA gets in on tiebreaks. (Again, I'm pretty sure it's head to head.)

    Does that clear things up?
  • George
You're talking about TFC, right, Sam?

James, I'm really confused too. I just hope that this all works out with Galaxy having a chance at the playoffs!
  • Sam
Well thanks to bloody RSL, we finish bottom. Argh.
  • James
Wait! I'm really confused due to the fact that Columbus won today, which means they finish the season with 37 points. If the Galaxy beats Chicago tomorrow, there will be a 3-way tie for 8th place with LA, Chicago, and Columbus each with 37 points. Now head to head, LA would beat Chicago, Chicago beats Columbus, and Columbus beats LA (goal differential). So what's the tiebreaker for a three-way tie? Is it goal differential? Then Columbus should be in. Anyway, I'm really confused now. Everyone assumed Columbus was out, but I haven't heard anyone talk about a three-way tie scenario. Anybody know how this works?
  • George
On the Galaxy Game Guide for tomorrow's game, it says that if Kansas got at least 1 point we'd be out, but I think they made a mistake. Thank You Findley! We love you!
  • Ian
Yeah, there seems to be something going around as far as blogger screwups - I just posted a UEFA Cup post without a category and now it brings up that "Your post has been handed a red card" message. It happens. Congratulations on still being in the playoffs, and expect a WORLD of shit from the rest of us about expelling yourself early. I guess this makes up for the MLS thing saying that the Gals had won when they actually tied. The hoop of life is complete.
  • frank
A Galaxy win against Chicago will give both teams 37 points. However, the Galaxy will win the final playoff spot because they "own" the tiebreaker against Chicago.
  • Greybush
Yeah, from threads in Bigsoccer and LA Riot Squad, people have calculated that we're still in it cuz of RSL's win tonight and that tomorrow's match is do-or-die for LA's playoff hopes.
  • Kenny
That's what I thought. A little premature Laurie.

P.S. You almost gave me a heart attack!
  • anthony
thats what im saying! good job "Laurie"!
  • frank
WAIT A MINUTE!!! RSL just beat Colorado on a Robbie Findley goal!! The Galaxy are still in it. If they beat Chicago tomorrow, they win the 8th and final playoff spot. They still have a chance with a win tomorrow!! Go Galaxy!!
  • anthony
    from www.latimes.com
    * Galaxy (34 points): Clinches by defeating Chicago and having either Kansas City lose or Colorado fail to win.

    the key word being "or"
  • Lee
Is this correct? From what I was reading it was
EITHER Dallas wins or RSL at least ties which they
    just did.
  • glen
it sucks, with the way the Galaxy have been playing it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if we got in. we just needed 2 or 3 better results during the season and we wouldn't have had to rely on crappy Dallas or other teams for that matter. hopefully we'll have a good game against the Fire and go out on a win.
