Observations From Saturday’s PanPacific “Championship” Title Match
By: NathanHJ | February 22nd, 2009There is something about the PanPacific “Championship” that is the epitome of AEG’s management of the Galaxy since the death of Doug Hamilton. It’s a trumped-up tournament featuring clubs from mostly secondary Asian leagues, some of whom, at least, _are_ actual champions, and the LA Galaxy who is involved because… we own David Beckham. Who didn’t play because he’s on loan to AC Milan and trying hard to stay there past March 9.
So we get a lot of hype, complete with a tournament theme song, a trophy, and a television contract for what is essentially a couple of pre-season friendlies with teams few MLS fans know anything about. Hype without substance. That’s what my experience with the Galaxy has been since Lalas was installed by the “brain”trust at AEG. In a lot of ways I feel like AEG has been doing to the Galaxy what Bush did to the country. (Oh wait, I just violated a cardinal rule of sports blogging – don’t bring politics or religion into it. Right. My apologies to the conservatives reading this post – feel free to rag on your liberal politician of choice in the comments. Great weather we’ve been having! How ’bout those Mets?)
Last night I didn’t know whether it was great that 9,000 people came to a pre-season game or embarrassing that 9,000 people came to a championship final.
Either way I can say that for me personally it was fun to be at the game and take a look at where the team is a month before the season starts. Below I’ve listed some of the observations I had while I was watching the game.
– It’s a good thing Sean Franklin has another month to recover from hernia surgery. He was rusty rusty rusty last night and had he not been shown red for his second-half studs-up tackle he could have easily earned his second yellow and been gone regardless.
– Are we really going to start the season with Eddie Lewis at left back, if he recovers from his left hamstring pull in time? Commentors on this blog have noted that Todd Dunivant is injured, so that would explain part of it, but that seems like a waste of his talents given our lack of a true left wing.
– Gonzalez could be good. He didn’t stand out to my eyes last night, but for defenders that’s often a good thing. If I don’t notice you, you are probably doing your job.
– Kirovski might have experience, futbol IQ, and vision, but he can’t win balls, waits to long to make passes, and get bumped off the ball pretty easily. He’s got a month to toughen up.
– As of last night Mike Magee is about 1000x more ready to play at this level than Ely Allen. Maybe Eddie Lewis at left back and Magee at left wing wouldn’t be so bad. Where does that put Duni?
– The best part about having Dema Kovalenko on our side is the LA Riot Squad cheer of “Dema, Dema, Dema – Kill, Kill, Kill”.
– Stefani Migliorianzi. Well, he didn’t suck.
– Edson Buddle should stick to open-field shots on goal. He was an immediate improvement up front when he came on, but its unlikely he will supplant Landon as the regular penalty-taker anytime soon. I understand that NASA was worried for an instant about an unauthorized rocket launch in the seconds following his blast.
– The starting midfield last night was long on grit and heart and short on flair and smart passing.
– As much as I love Alan Gordon’s workrate and commitment, I just think his feet of stone and his not-quite-sharp-enough passing aren’t enough to make him anything but a big banging body who is decent on set plays in the box. If this were basketball I’d put him in a center to bang around, take some charges, and maybe slam down a couple of alley oops. But that’s a game with unlimited substitutions. In futbol we only get the three…
– Tony Sanneh had veteran presence, but also veteran speed.
– For a tiny guy AJ DeLaGarza can clog up the middle when he needs to. I worry about his pace, though.
What about you guys? What did you see? What seemed promising? Who needs works? Who impressed? Who embarrassed? How much do you agree with my observations? Where was I obviously watching a different game from the one you saw? Fire away in the comments.

I had to go to a wedding last night and only caught about five minutes plus the penalty shootout. I had three thoughts.
1) I don’t think it’s coincidence that the guys waited to score till I could watch.
2) This is me, loving Dema. (Except when he plays against Sounders.)
3) Who the hell are these guys? I hardly recognized anybody!
Oh, two more things. Time for Bruce to work on penalties, and I agree wholeheartedly about the “tournament.”

I flipped on FSC last night and almost spilled my pint because the first thing I saw was Tony Sanneh picking up a yellow card. Tony Sanneh! I was so shocked because last I heard he had called it quits a couple years ago.
We went to the same high school in Minnesota and even though he had graduated a few years before I got there he was a fixture at our practices. For a while in the mid 90s when Tony played for the Thunder he would show up with a few of his teammates and train with us for the last hour, then they would catch a ride with our coach (also the longtime Thunder coach) to their training session. Tony was still playing forward at the time and he was an absolute beast. He’s easily one of the two or three best players I’ve ever shared the pitch with.
It really is quite humbling to be just north of 30 and many years removed from your athletic peak, then seeing a 37 year old who has dealt with several serious injuries still attempting to compete at a high level. It almost makes me want to go run a few miles….almost.

“Dema, Dema, Dema – Kill, Kill, Kill”
I love that!!!
I have a prediction about Kirovski. I think he is going to DRAMATICALLY improve when Landon returns. He DOES have the soccer IQ and vision that you mentioned — and playing with Landon is going to complement it perfectly. He was struggling a bit with Mr. LeadFeet (Gordon) and having no creative midfielder to make runs off of.
I agree that Eddie Lewis needs to be at left half. Sure, he can contribute his great crosses and runs up the wing from defense, but he has great vision and can be more creative at left mid — especially with the Donovan/Kirovski combo and Buddle as a target forward? I’d like to see Dunivant at left back. And then I think we put Magee in center mid with Dema and let him learn the position with the rest around him.
So I guess I have a line up that would look like this:
–Kirovski/Buddle——-Buddle/Donovan—
Lewis———Magee/Donovan———–Klein
—————-Kovalenko——————
Dunivant—–Sanneh—–Gonzalez(so far)—–Franklin
That already is an improvement over last year. And if Mr. Beckham returns, well then I think I move Klein back to right back because he and Becks really DO connect well together. And I would likely move Franklin back to central defense with Sanneh. I think he would really shine with Tony’s presence there. Sanneh is a MUCH better defender at central mid than any of the others were last year.
I’m optimistic.

And Yevy, that’s a great story! FSC commentators were saying last night that Tony hoped that his injuries had actually prolonged his career, so that he has a few decent years left in him. I think his and Klein’s leadership and humility is going to drastically improve the locker room and pump up the heart of the team.

Magee will be the surprise superstar this year for LA.
Dema – you are lucky to have him. One of my fave’s
And to conclude: Barney Franks stinks.

jen – the Galaxy got another fan last night! I am extremely curious to see what Tony has left in the tank. He looked pretty rusty which is to be expected but his instincts are still there. Also I wonder how much of an aerial threat he can still pose at this stage of his career. He seemed rooted to the ground at the near post on the attacking set pieces.
Also would like to add my congratulations on Kovalenko – yet another in a long line of talented players raised in Kiev. Wouldn’t it be something if the Galaxy got Shevchenko from Milan as part of the Beckham deal? Silly rumor I admit, but it would pretty much force me to buy a shirt.

Acually Shevchenko was linked with the MLS when he was riding the bench at Chelsea and he still isn’t playing much at Milan. Plus his wife is American SOOO.. you never know.

Tuck – I’ve actually seen both Sheva’s and Ronaldinho’s names floated in mainstream media Beckham rumors in recent weeks. I’m sure Andriy’s whip cracker of a spouse would gladly sacrifice what’s left of his career to get him to LA. And even though his current form is on par with the MLS, Sheva does not have the name recognition in the U.S. to justify the Galaxy paying him the sort of money he is getting now.

All most all the comments I agree with, except those aimed at the x-President! To move on, AEG and Galaxy talking heads say that “when” Beckham returns, he will be the utmost professional. If utmost professional means, self-centered, me-ONLY attitude, then he fits perfectly. He has shown his true colors, and I hope he DOES not return, or if so, leaves at the end of the year. Enough Beckham mania crap! As far as the Galaxy on the field; 2nd rate teams you are right, but they outplayed the Galaxy anyway. I stoppe watching after the own-goal. Defense is still a sieve and seems to stop nothing. NO OFFENSE, NO OFFENSE, NO OFFENSE…seems evident. Maybe some of these players will step up to the rolls, but it could be another long and dreadful season to watch!

Marcus,
Thanks for the comment! Sorry to offend with comments on the Ex. Feel free to take the Dave Martinez approach and dis your own targets.
Suwon did outplay the Galaxy, but I know that we were playing a very make-shift lineup both because of injuries and because Arena is checking new talent out. We played much better at the end when Buddle and Magee were in the mix.
Having said that, I agree with your no offense comments. That’s my big worry. If Landon does not come back, the team is going to struggle for goals unless Kirovski and Magee step up. Buddle is talented, but thrives on service.
However, if both Becks and Landon return then the team could be very good, actually. The defense is still weak, but already a big improvement from last year. If Gonzalez can mature quickly and if Dema does his job, then the D will be better than last year by a lot. If not, then it will continue to compete with d-mid as the weakest part of the team.
If we could get Lewis, Magee, Donovan, Beck, Klein, Buddle and Kovalenko on the field all at the same time, it will be a very good tough team to play against. But if we can’t get that combo, the team is going to be average of someplace below it.
We’ve got a month more to see what happens…

Ooh, some tough news to swallow. Looks like we got rid Randolph, Cronin, and MacDonald. It’s sad, since all of these players showed flashes of brilliance at some points.

Also, in the category of “Former Galaxy Players”, Necaxa signed Pavon:

Oh, George, that’s sad. (The Randolph, Cronin and MacDonald thing, not the Pavon thing.) I’m especially sorry for Randolph, who came so close to making the Olympic team, only to crash and burn. And now this.
