Some More Thoughts On That Galaxy Win

By: Laurie | April 30th, 2007

Just a few random thoughts that have popped into my brain since Saturday night.

– Does anybody else have a little mini panic attack whenever they do that third substition? Especially this one. I mean, in comes Quavas Kirk, sub #3 when the score was 2-1. Then down goes Chris Albright, and he’s rolling around on the ground and I’m thinking, Crap. If he’s out, there are not enough little rubber stress balls in the world to get me through this. Fortunately Chris was all right, and even had a hand (or foot) in the next goal. But then Tyrone Marshall went down, same thing. (And yes, I may be getting the order wrong. But you get the idea.) Fortunately it all worked out okay. This time.

– Speaking of subs, nicely done, Frank! The rights sets of fresh legs at the right time. So tell me, folks: Do you think Cobi Jones is destined to be the sub of choice, or will he be playing out the season more often as a starter? I’m of two minds on this. On the one hand, it’s his last season, he’s still solid… Let the guy play it out. On the other hand, he smoked the guy defending him and was so perfectly placed for that last goal… What are the chances he could’ve done that if he’d played the full 75 up to that point?

– Speaking of subs again, it’s good to see Pete Vagenas back. Did I also hear Santino Quaranta is back training?

– This will sound traitorous, but how fun was it for me to see Laurent Merlin playing? If he’d been facing anybody except Joe Cannon and the Galaxy, I would have loved to see that shot of his go in. Oh, and also? How fun was it to hear the announcers trying to pronounce “Laurent Merlin” correctly, French-style? And they actually didn’t do that badly.

– I said it before, but it bears repeating: I was SO happy to see Kyle Martino handling a large percentage of the corners and free kicks.

– Somebody (Dan Loney maybe?) said that the key to knowing how the Galaxy will do in any given game comes by ascertaining the state of Landon Donovan’s marriage. Anybody have a Bianca connection? I’m thinking we could make a bundle in Vegas.

Last thing: Can somebody make sure Landon and Bianca are really, really happy before the RBNY game? Thank you.

Martino can take all the free kicks… for now. He is our number one liability in the midfield. Guess who’s gone once you-know-who arrives?

    Great to see Pete back.

Doug, this is so funny. Because of you, I’ve paid special attention to Kyle Martino, and I’m still just not seeing what you’re seeing. (That’s one of the things I find interesting about soccer. When we watch football, or baseball, or even basketball, what I see will be what everybody else in the universe sees, pretty much. Not so with soccer. Six people will have six different reads after the game. Which is why 44% of people voted for Landon as man of the match after the FCD game.)

Or maybe I’m not seeing screw-ups to a larger degree than most of the other midfielders. Maybe he doesn’t distribute the ball quite as well as some others, but in my mind he makes up for it by getting in and fighting for it to begin with.

Or perhaps I’m delusional. There’s always that possibility. I have the game recorded and ready for watching again. (Although this is complicated by the fact that there are two Champions League games this week and I have only so much time to watch soccer.) I’ll tell you if I change my mind.

But I’m afraid you’re right about who the odd man out will be post-Beckham. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kyle go elsewhere next year.
