The Huge Cost of Writing on Our Guys’ Bodies

So who will it be? Who will get the opportunity to spend millions of dollars to emblazon their logo on our guys’ Beckham-designed jerseys?

Rumor has it that Citibank is offering $49 million over five years. Whoa. Wouldn’t that, like, almost pay Beckham’s salary?

The other name apparently in the running is Herbalife. No, seriously. (Is credibility even an issue here? Or is it all money? I mean, honestly. Herbalife? Why don’t we just invite the world to a giant Amway party and call it good?)

I’ve long thought that MLS was going to have to get creative about bringing in the bucks, and jersey sponsorships are a low-risk way to do that. But c’mon, folks. Let’s maintain a little dignity.

Citibank? Forty-nine million? Sounds really good to me!
