Today Only! Obsolete Uniforms! Only Full Price!
By: Laurie | February 23rd, 2007So as part of my dedicated effort to learn to love the Galaxy and MLS, I’ve signed on to receive every little promo and junk e-mail that the Galaxy has to offer. I want it all! Easter Egg Hunts! Dollar sales! Beckham Academy! (More on that one later.)
It was the green and gold caps in the “Buy $75 worth of stuff, get something for $1″ promo that led me back to the Galaxy store. (Well, not directly. When I clicked the link, I got the “you must first enable your cookies” error message. Which always sounds vaguely obscene. And my freakin’ cookies ARE enabled, thankyouverymuch. But I digress.) Anyhow. I made it to the MLS store.
Did you know that you can still buy all kinds of green and gold stuff? For full price? $19.99 for a cap, $64.99 to $89.99 for a jersey. Yes, it does kind of say in small print that they’re “2006,” but if they’re selling them on the official website for full price in 2007, would a consumer not generally assume that the team might someday once again actually wear these colors?
What do they do, ship them out with an insert reading, “Thanks SO MUCH for reducing our excess inventory! Sucka!”
I dunno, folks. If you were a kid who spent his last $64.99 (plus all applicable taxes and fees) on a Landon Donovan green and gold jersey…
It just seems a little low.
(Oh, and for the record, from the site: *Please note - At this time we are unable to customize any LA Galaxy jerseys with the player name “Beckham”. Any orders that are placed containing the name “Beckham” will be canceled and you will be notified by email. - Thank you.”
Couldn’t possibly be because Beckham will never actually wear the green and gold now, could it?

Indeed, it’s pretty cold on their part; most sports franchises I’m aware of usually discount old merchandise when there’s about to be a major change-up…but hey, I imagine the Galaxy are experiencing one of their biggest merchandising surges to date (if not THE biggest - someone crank out those numbers, why don’t ya, I’m curious), so I suppose I can’t blame ‘em!
As long as they make up for it by ensuring sufficient availability of the new Galaxy gear whenever it launches, including the ever-elusive Beckham jersey, then all will be forgiven, in my eyes.
