Zidane (and Barthez) to Play Against Galaxy?
By: Laurie | August 20th, 2007
This is old news (a couple of weeks old, at least), but I need something to brighten my day, so I think I’ll write it up. And then I’ll spend several cheery, happy minutes searching for just the right photo.
And this will take my mind off the fact that a) my team was on the losing end of what some people are calling the Match of the Year. (Pffffbbttt. And yes, Dave, I’m talkin’ to you.) Plus b) it’s currently 64 degrees and pouring down rain here and not expected to get better. Where the hell did my summer go?
But that doesn’t matter now, because I get to write about…guess who? You’ll never guess who has the power to cheer me up. (And no fair cheating by looking at the post title. Or the photo. Although how can you not look at that photo? So adorable they are not human.) But…okay, okay, I’ll tell you. It’s Zinedine Zidane. (I know. You’re shocked.)
Seems they weren’t able to entice him away from retirement to play long-term for the Galaxy, but it looks as if Sydney FC may have been able to rope him in temporarily to play against the Galaxy in that November friendly in Australia.
It is believed the Frenchman, who retired after being sent off in the 2006 World Cup final loss to Italy, will receive in excess of $300,000, which will go to his charity, the Zidane Foundation.
And not only that, it looks like one of my all-time favorite goalkeepers, Frenchman Fabien Barthez, may be joining him as well.
Barthez AND Zizou? That’s like a double-dip Baskin Robbins cone with Pralines ‘n’ Cream AND Chocolate Almond. It doesn’t get any better than this.
Particularly when Barthez isn’t playing for the team I’m rooting for. No offense to Fabien, because I will always adore him, but the man is completely lacking in opposable thumbs. Which makes every game he plays an exercise in screaming, “Catch the ball! No, CATCH! CATCH! THE! BALL!!!”
Love you, Fabien! You made my World Cup SO exciting. And I’m really, really looking forward to seeing you and Zizou play against my boys.
(And they will find a way to show it here. Right?)

Are you kidding, you’ll have found your way onto the team jet by then (it’s the least they can do after you won the last Superliga match for them).
Very, very cute boys…Posted from

Glad to finally hear you reflect on it, but alas -

Oh, fine, Brad. Take away my hopes. Destroy my dreams. Stomp on my heart. Steal away that one last ray of sunshine which was keeping me from hurtling into suicidal depression.
Although I’ve already made a trip to LA this year, solely to watch soccer. And I’m hoping for at least one more. And I’m planning a trip to Paris, mainly to watch soccer. I couldn’t figure out how I was going to fit in a trip to Australia too. So this is probably a good thing.

Didn’t mean to crush your spirits… I’m disappointed to, I woulda loved Zizou back on the field, and I’m a big Barthez fan too… but I thought this was a friendly against Sydney FC, not the retired French national team…
