Yet Another Zidane-to-Galaxy Rumor

By: Laurie | July 29th, 2007

zidane-world-cup.jpgThis is oh-so-much-more fun to write about than losing to Chivas, so I think I’ll just pretend for the moment that last night’s game never happened. What shall I focus on instead?

Oh…let’s see…I don’t know… How about another totally unsubstantiated Zinedine Zidane-to-Galaxy rumor?

Being gone all week, I missed this until Mia, one of the readers of my France page, brought it to my attention. Seems at least a couple of sources are reporting that Alexi Lalas has yet again made an offer to Zidane to try to get him to come to the Galaxy.

This one’s in Spanish, and basically says that Zidane’s been offered 35 million Euros (or just over $44 million.)

This one’s in French and says that Simon Fuller (the evil mastermind behind Brand Beckham and American Idol) is pairing with Adidas to offer Zidane 36 million Euros.

Feel free to Google translate both and enjoy yourself. I’d do it for you, but I’m feeling lazy.

So what do I think? Well, first, let’s ignore completley the fact that we’ve already used our DP slot and would have to find a team willing to trade theirs. Let’s pretend that’s not an issue. (And, since AEG also owns Houston, which as far as I know hasn’t used their slot yet… Well, maybe it’s not an issue.)

My thoughts: Okay, first I need a moment to get past the whole creepiness of the thought of Zidane being associated with Simon Fuller. Ick! Eww! No, no, NO!! Zizou, turn away from The Dark Side! There has to be somebody else who can put this together! He’ll suck out your soul and turn your lovely, reticent wife into a self-obsessed, surgically enhanced hard-nippled Super Shopper who can’t go fifteen seconds without having her photo taken! As much as it pains me to say this, I prefer to see you walk away from MLS rather than be sucked into the Simon Fuller machine.

I think the offer is genuine, though. Zidane has as much as said that the Galaxy has come calling before. But the man is thirty-five years old and has been retired for more than a year now. From all that I’ve read, I don’t think he’s going to pick up his cleats and come to MLS.

But I’d be way beyond thrilled to be wrong.

Zidane’s on the cover of the most recent issue of FourFourTwo, if you didn’t know. He says something about how he would have played another season if he hadn’t announced his retirement, but there wasn’t any going back, and I don’t really see him becoming the football version of Jay-Z.

If Zidane does come back, he signed a clause with Real that ensures that he would play with them.

Zidane’s done, in my opinion. Although it would amuse the hell out of me if he came to Chivas and killed Becks in every made-up rivalry game they played … putting Honda as a name sponsor on that rivalry just kills me … anyway, I hope he’s done. Maybe one more exhibition head-butt tour. He could get Kyle Beckerman for me … I just don’t like that guy.
